Chapter 11 - A Freak’s Welcome

'Metal magic? I've never heard of such a thing' Logan thought to himself,

"Must be really unique" He actually said to Orion, "Oh you have no idea" Orion replied with his usual smile.

"Now some of you might be wondering why I am the one in charge of your orientation" The Life Magus' voice spoke before he took a pause.

"Well that's because I'm the official Headmaster of this year" He revealed much to the surprise of everyone present,

"The academy has a system whereby each year sees a different headmaster and this time, I was selected" He explained once the buzz of the excitement from his earlier revelation died down.

"But I also wish to use this opportunity to share with you all my story. The story of the Life Magus and more importantly, the story of Victor Blane" His said to all those present, his voice turning serious.

The entire first year went silent, even those that weren't paying attention turned their focus towards him.

"I won't lie to you by cooking up a valiant tale of my past within this very academy, rather I'll tell you the truth" He paused, the heavy tone hooking the attention of the students around him.

"When I joined in the first year, I had only one streak, silver. Light magic; an amazing gift that heals" Victor, the Life Magus, started his narration,

"Because light magic centers on healing and is not readily battle oriented, I was bullied" Victor spoke causing most people present to gasp in shock.

And for those with silver streaks to nod confirmatively, as they shared his pain.

"Every single day I would be beaten, forced to heal myself and when my oppressors beat other people, they forced me to heal them" His voiced turned a bit emotional.

"It continued rinse and repeat for almost everyday of the first year" The students listening had a mix of emotions.

Some were sad -pitying the man, others remained indifferent, and the select few appeared amused as he told the tales of his suffering.

"All these changes in the second year when I received a second elemental streak" Victor paused,

"Unlike most people that have multiple streaks from the moment they are born, some have it appear in later stages of their life" The life magus, Victor, spoke gesturing to those among them that had more than one streak.

"I immediately changed classes from healing to battle. I challenged and defeated those that had oppressed me" His tone turned wistful.

"And as chance would have it, I would gain my third streak in the third year" He continued,

"Combining the three streak I have in the consecutive order I got them, I achieved plant magic" He waved his hand in the air.

The tarred ground infront of him took on a slight glow before moisture spread in it. it cracked suddenly, revealing the earth beneath.

A small shoot slowly spread out from the open ground and rapidly grew into a tree. It had wide branches and leaves, it grew golden flowers that quickly wilted to grow fruits of six different colors; red, blue, yellow, brown, silver and black.

"This is what earned me the title of Life Magus" He completed his narration, his voice blending with the smooth rustle of the leaves on the tree.

"Never forget why I told you this. The number of streaks a person has doesn't determine talent or potential" He explained to all hundred students before him,

"It doesn't matter if they have three, two, one or even none…" He paused, looking at Logan in the eyes at the last part,

"Everyone's potential is boundless" He concluded, his eyes still on Logan.

"I wonder what his deal is with you" Orion whispered into Logan right ear causing the latter to flinch due to how uncomfortable it was.

"That's it for your orientation. You have your tablets and a map, find the way to your room and endeavor to choose your classes as soon as possible so that suitable schedules can be made" Victor spoke to the students,

"Bye for now" He finalized as water gathered on his back, forming a pair of wings.

He crouched and with a massive jump, flew away.

The students started to disperse, heading to their various rooms and Logan was no different,

"My room number is 14, what's yours?" Orion asked, his eyes on his tablet.

Logan looked at his and scrolled through his information,

[Room Number: 018]

"Room 18 I guess" Logan replied,

"Such a shame that we aren't in the same room but it seems we would be close. Haha, prepare to have me over all the time my friend" Orion laughed.

Playing with a coin in his hands, the coin turned to a needle for a split second before turning back to normal,

"Who said that we were friends?" Logan retorted,

"Bull! We're best friends and you already know it" Orion replied to which Logan could only heave a helpless sigh.

"I knew I shouldn't have spoken to him" He mumbled to himself much to Orion's hearing,

"But you did, no use crying over spilled milk. Now let's go find our rooms" The latter responded already walking off in the direction dictated by the map.

The map led them to two buildings close to one another, they both had similar design to the hospital except for the presence of windows,

And the image of a scepter, similar to the one on the bronze statue, was on the building to the right and the image of a book on the left one.

"The right is for boys while the left is for the girls" Orion muttered as he read the information on his tablet,

He and Logan entered the building on the right.

On getting inside, they saw other students. Some were mildly chatting, others entering a metal ring on the ground before vanishing,

And as for the last set of people, they glared unendingly at Logan.

The latter ignored them and entered the ring, "STATE FLOOR NUMBER" a monotone voice that it seemed only Logan could hear spoke to him,

"First floor" Logan said calmly and a familiar disorientation hit him.

He held back his nausea as he stared at the long hall with a total of 25 rooms.

The accommodations worked like this, the first and second floor was for first years, having 25 rooms each and two beds in one, thus accommodating a hundred students successfully.

The third and last floor had a similar setup but was for the second years and as for the third years, Logan had no idea where they stayed.

Logan approached the door with the number '018' on it and opened it slowly.

The room was neatly arranged with a bunk bed to the right, two reading tables on the opposite side of the room and a closet full of what Logan guessed to be the academy's tracksuits.

Logan approached the lower bunk and saw a letter with his name on it,

"We are coming for you freak"

Was all that it read with grey wisps briefly emanating from the paper.
