Chapter 16 - First Day At The Academy(1)~Deals in the Dark

Logan stood in front of a door with the word 'Headmaster' written in gold on it.

He inhaled sharply and let out a frigid breath before entering. There he saw the Life Magus, Victor, sitting behind his desk on a rotating and soft looking chair.

"Sir" Victor spoke, gesturing to the chair on Logan's side of the table.

The latter sat and remained silent as the Headmaster observed him,"When they said it was a fight, I expected it to be a two way brawl not a singular move victory" The headmaster commented with a slightly humored grin.

"Okay you're free to go" He told Logan waving his hand to the exit, "Wait, I'm leaving just like that?" Logan spoke out of turn due to the shock he felt.

He had planned to con or talk his way out of a punishment but getting what he wanted without any effort on his part felt strange.

"Do you think it's every case of fighting the academy will hold in high regard? Plus it's only a broken nose. Even an F-rank light mage can heal it" Victor spoke his calm eyes on Logan.

"Or is there another offense you have committed also while on your first day?" Victor asked with a raised eyebrow while putting emphasis on the last part.

Logan shook his head before exiting the office and returning to his dormitory.

In the hospital of the academy or specifically one of its rooms, a young noble was lamenting to himself.

"Since when do common folk have the audacity to lay their hands on nobility?!" He yelled as he threw a hospital dish on the ground.

His eyes were glazed with so much anger that he failed to notice the shadows and darkness alike in the room stir.

A humanoid figure slowly emerged from their embrace, yet it seemed like it was made of the darkness and shadows it just escaped.

"Since when indeed." It whispered into the young man's ears, he turned to the source of the voice and saw nothing.

"It doesn't matter where I am. What matters is how I can help you." It whispered again, it's voice a cacophony of voices.

"Help me? How can you help?" He asked the voice and although filled with suspicion, something about it made him lower his guard.

"No. I'll tell you how only if you agree to help me." The voice replied, its voice reaching a pitch so inhumane.

"What do you want?" The noble asked with a semblance of wary in his tone, "Simple, revenge. The kingdom is hiding someone who had the audacity to take something from me." The voice spoke, sorrow palpable in its tone.

"I want to find that person but only if you can help me." It finished its request.

Every inch of the noble's body begged him not to trust this entity that had appeared literally out of nowhere but he remembered the embarrassment Logan made him face, 'What do I have to lose?' He lied to himself, the last traces of hesitation dissipating.

"Oh. If that's the case then I'll help." The foolish young noble agreed to the voices deal, "I'll grant you magic equivalent to that of a C-rank mage" The voice offered to which the noble quickly accepted.

Unbeknownst to him, a grey wisps of energy left the humanoid figure and entered the boy, "Don't forget our deal. We'll be waiting." The voice spoke before vanishing.

Logan laid on his bed yet his eyes were wide open, 'Mom, Dad, I made it to the academy.' He thought before closing his eyes and falling asleep.

Logan's eyes flew open and he observed his surroundings, he looked out the window that hung close to the ceiling of his room and could see that it was still the break of dawn.

He got up from his bed and quickly prepped for his first class in the academy.

Checking his schedule, he could see that his first class was unsurprisingly 'Theory of Mana' and was starting by 8:00.

Looking at the time that still showed 6:37, Logan knew he had a lot of time. After grabbing food from the empty cafeteria, he headed to the library to the return the mana cultivation book.

"You broke through so quickly. You must have been on the edge of that for a while now." The librarian calmly noted.

She was a woman in her early sixties, her black hair had grey and blue streaks. The former being from old age and the latter being her actual elemental affinity.

"So are you also going to collect your two spells or would you prefer to do so later?" She asked Logan with a gentle smile.

'I guess they have informed and given her the range of spells for me to choose from.' Logan thought as he pondered on the question.

Seeing the uncertain expression on Logan's face, the librarian spoke, "You can always come later if it'll be troublesome for you right now." She suggested with a gentle smile.

Seeing this Logan made up his mind, "I'll like to make a pick at the spells I want." Logan said with conviction filling his voice and face alike.

"A young man that knows what he wants. Your kind is hard to find." She spoke as she handed Logan a transparent crystal the size of a ping-pong.

Logan had used this the previous day to select the mana cultivation technique of his choice and so he knew how to operate it.

He poured a bit of mana and a list appeared in his head.

Dark Wave

Dark Pulse

World Devourer

Dark Flash

Dark Coat

Dark Space

Dark Clone…

A list of about ten spells appeared in his vision, he read the description of everything a couple of times before making his selection.

Dark Flash

Dark Space

Logan handed the crystal back to the Librarian before informing her of his choice.

"Okay. Are you sure though?" She asked as he glanced at Logan with surprise in her face. In general, the spells he had chosen were spells no one in his age group would consider choosing.

"I'm sure. Very much so." Logan smiled at her.

"Come back at the end of the day to receive your spells." She spoke before picking up a random book to start reading.

Logan walked out of the library and saw Orion staring at him intently. Logan walked past him ready to ignore his presence.

"You like those grey wisps?" Orion asked Logan causing the latter to pause.
