Chapter 44: The Kidnapping Attempt
Blood splattered the floor.
Dmitri roared and punched Luca hard in the gut, then brought his elbow crashing down on Luca's back. Luca stumbled forward, coughing, his vision swimming. He tried to stand again, but Dmitri kicked him violently in the chest, sending him flying into a pile of broken furniture with a loud crash.
Janet screamed. "Luca!"
But Dmitri turned to her with a twisted smile. "Enough of this."
He stormed toward her and lifted her over his shoulder, ignoring her fists pounding against his back.
"Put me down, you monster!" she screamed, kicking her legs wildly. Her heart pounded like a drum. She looked over his shoulder and saw Luca lying still, his body limp.
"No one's going to save you now, Janet," Dmitri snarled.
But Janet's eyes burned with fury and desperation. She twisted her neck and—sank her teeth hard into his wrist.
"AHHH!" Dmitri howled in pain. His grip loosened, and in a rage, he threw her onto the cold floor. She groaned in pain but pushed herself up, teeth gritted.
That's when she saw it.
A glimmer.
A gun… just inches away.
