Chapter 5 - A Fire That Never Went Out

When Lena Su brought up the word "divorce," Ethan Mo froze, as if something deep inside him was slowly slipping away—something he desperately wanted to hold on to, but could only grasp at empty pain.

Meng Kexin's eyes lit up with delight. She instinctively looked at Ethan, only to see his eyes surge with uncontrollable fury.

"Divorce? Lena Su, the only reason you became Mrs. Mo was to atone for your family's sins. What right do you have to ask for a divorce? This marriage only ends when I say it does!"

With that, Ethan stormed out of the room, clutching the wound on his arm, rage still boiling in his chest. Meng Kexin shot a hateful glare at Lena before quickly chasing after him.

Now that the two of them had finally left, Lena collapsed weakly to the ground, emotionally drained. Tears began to stream uncontrollably down her face.

She had fallen in love with Ethan Mo the moment she saw him at the age of ten. Fifteen long years had passed since then.

But one devastating fire had not only taken the life of Ethan's mother—a woman who had loved Lena like her own daughter—it had also driven a wedge between her and Ethan that only grew wider over time.

She would never forget the look in his eyes when he accused her of setting the fire on purpose—disappointment laced with hatred, seared into her soul.

For a crime she never committed, she was forced to marry into the Mo family. She endured torment day after day, living in a personal hell. And now, she couldn't even protect her own unborn child.

She loved him so deeply—how could she bear to leave him? But she truly couldn't take it anymore.

Yet no matter how resolute she tried to be, in Ethan's eyes, it was all laughable—because he never intended to let her go.

Lena felt cold all over. Despite the heater blasting in the room, she felt like she was trapped in an ice cellar, her body curled up and trembling uncontrollably. The wound on her forehead had long stopped bleeding, but the pain had burrowed deep into her bones, leaving her dizzy and faint.

Her abdomen ached even more intensely. Crimson blood gushed between her legs, pooling beneath her body, growing thicker by the second. She tried to get up, but her strength had abandoned her.

With great effort, she reached for the nurse call button by the hospital bed. She finally managed to press it, but no one came.

The automated buzzing of the call repeated over and over in the empty room, echoing the bitter hopelessness in her heart.

This was Ethan Mo's hospital. Without his orders, who would dare to help her?

Ethan Mo… how much do you really hate me?

Would you only be satisfied if I died?

Lena felt like her heart was being torn apart. Summoning what little strength she had left, she fumbled for her phone and dialed a number.

"Ziyan… please help me…"

Her voice was barely a whisper. After giving the hospital address, she collapsed completely. Her eyes fell on the screen, where a candid photo of a man stared back at her.

Ethan Mo… if I really die, would you miss me… even just a little?

Probably not, right? You'd probably be happy—finally free to marry Meng Kexin without guilt.

And I… I'd finally be free from your cruelty. I could be with your mother again, and with our unborn child.

As Lena felt her life slipping away with each drop of blood, her consciousness slowly faded. And finally, she fell into darkness and passed out.
