Chapter 32: Lost in the Crowd
The party sparkled with opulence. Laughter floated in the air. A woman in emerald heels tapped the mic and delivered a toast for prosperity and unity in business.
Luca and Janet had taken their seats near the center. A waiter approached with champagne. Janet took a glass without hesitation. Luca didn't.
"Don't drink too much," he said quietly.
She sipped anyway.
He left soon after to speak with fellow magnates and investors, deep in strategy and handshakes. Janet watched him disappear into the sea of suits and silk.
Left alone, she felt a dull ache in her heart. The label of "wife" hung heavy. Was she truly his? Or just another pawn in someone else's game?
With no one to speak to, she wandered to the terrace, heels clicking gently, and finally settled beside the shimmering swimming pool. It was quieter there, away from false smiles and expectations.
She finished one glass. Then another. And another.
Her pain demanded silence.
And alcohol delivered.
