School Essay by Lily Maou
Title: "My Parents Are Crazy, but I Want to Be Just Like Them."
Hi! My name is Lily Maou and I'm five and a half years old, which means I'm already basically a grown-up. This week, our homework was to write about our family. So here goes:
My mommy's name is Sakura Maou. She used to be a super cool hero who saved the world by swinging a shiny sword and slicing monsters in half. Now she works in an office where she slices paperwork and yells at printers instead. Sometimes I catch her staring out the window like she's gonna cry, but when she sees me, she smiles and says, "Don't worry, Mommy's still the strongest." I believe her. She can carry me, all the groceries, and Daddy's unconscious demon body at the same time.
My daddy's name is Ragna Maou. He used to be the Demon Lord, which means everyone was afraid of him. Now he's afraid of Yelp reviews and deep fryers. He runs a restaurant and he burns curry a lot, but he makes the best spicy pork buns in the universe! (They sometimes scream when you bite them, but it's okay, they stop after a few seconds.) He acts like he's lazy, but I saw him fight a flaming skeleton monster once while wearing a Hello Kitty apron. I think that makes him pretty awesome.
Sometimes they fight. Like a lot. Like they throw fireballs and swords and insult each other's cooking and sometimes the walls explode. But they always apologize after, and then they cuddle on the couch while watching TV. I think that's love.
Sometimes I get scared because my powers feel like they're exploding inside me. I see weird things… like other worlds, and people who want to hurt my family. But then Mommy hugs me and Daddy pats my head and says, "Let 'em try."
I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Maybe a hero. Maybe a chef. Maybe a demon overlord in sparkly leggings. But I do know I want to protect people, laugh a lot, and make really good food.
Just like my parents.
Even if they're both totally nuts.
