Chapter 87 - Chapter 87: Leaving Cerulean

The next morning, after finishing his usual warm-up routine, Silas left Cerulean City with his three Pokémon. He still had things to take care of.

While walking through a forest, he noticed a pink Pokémon by a small river ahead. It was soaking its tail in the water, seemingly trying to fish.

"Well, if it isn't a Slowpoke."

Silas brightened up. Looked like he'd be having a delicious lunch today what luck.

Slowpoke tails, alongside Farfetch'd, were considered two of the most delicious delicacies in the world.

However, unlike Farfetch'd, Slowpoke tails were actually legal to eat.

Farfetch'd, when cooked together with the specific plant stalks they always carried, became incredibly tasty. Before the Pokémon League had issued a protection law for them, humans had cruelly hunted them in large numbers for food, nearly wiping them out. As a result, Farfetch'd had become very rare.

The League officially listed Farfetch'd as a protected species. Anyone found eating one would be harshly punished, and authorities would trace the entire chain who captured it, who sold it, and so on.

Slowpoke tails, on the other hand, were different. They naturally fell off over time, and only the tails were considered delicious.

Humans didn't need to treat Slowpoke the same way as Farfetch'd. They could simply wait for the tails to fall off naturally and collect them.

In fact, if you forcibly cut off a Slowpoke's tail, it wouldn't taste as good. Studies suggested this was due to certain biological structures in the Pokémon's body.

Still, Slowpoke tails were frequently pulled off though the Pokémon itself was too slow-witted to notice any pain. Thanks to its incredible regeneration abilities, a new tail would grow back quickly.

If you happened to see a Slowpoke in the wild and followed its trail, you could often find its group and quite a few naturally shed tails along the way.

After all, Slowpoke were extremely slow to react and paid no attention to their fallen tails.

But getting this lucky wasn't guaranteed. Slowpoke didn't shed their tails very often, and if someone else had already found the group before you, they likely would've taken everything.

As for farm-raised Slowpoke tails, they didn't taste as good as the wild ones and were considered lower quality. Their price wasn't as high either but with a bit of splurging, most people could afford to eat one now and then.

Silas walked up to the Slowpoke, which was still watching its tail, waiting for the sweet scent in the water to attract something.

Ignoring the Pokémon, Silas followed the trail it had left behind. Soon, he found its group nearby.

Pushing aside a bit of underbrush, he quietly observed them.

He didn't barge in. Slowpoke might be slow, but that didn't mean they wouldn't react to intruders.

Luck was on his side. It was a small group of just four Slowpoke. On the grass where they lay, Silas spotted three naturally shed, complete tails easy to distinguish from a few broken ones nearby that had clearly been yanked off.

Backing away a bit, Silas released Pidgeot. He patted its head gently. Pidgeot lowered itself slightly, listening to its trainer's instructions.

With a slight nod from Silas, Pidgeot soared into the sky.

Less than a minute later, it returned carrying all three tails.

"Nice work!" Silas praised with a smile. "Three tails just enough for me, you, and Blaziken."

You might ask what about Boldore?

Come on. Boldore didn't even have a mouth. The two holes on its body were actually its energy core. Its way of "eating" was simply absorbing minerals.

Checking the time it was 11 a.m. Unknowingly, he'd been walking in the forest all morning.

Luckily, he wasn't in a rush to get anywhere, and the forest had been cleared of powerful wild Pokémon by the League because of the nearby Pokémon Academy. That's why he could pass through it so easily.

He casually picked an empty spot and took out his cooking gear to prepare the Slowpoke tails.

The cooking method? Boiling. Anything else would ruin the tail's natural flavor.

He prepared the main meals for his three Pokémon, then pulled out a portable coffee machine and made himself a cup. Now, all he had to do was wait.

When it came to food, Silas never cut corners for himself or his Pokémon. As long as he had the means, he always went for the best.

That was also why he didn't sell the Slowpoke tails for money.

This was his first time obtaining such a delicacy of course he had to share it with his Pokémon.

Thinking of that, Silas quickly pulled out a silver, palm-sized mineral.

It was silver ore. For Boldore, it tasted amazing. Though it had no real nutritional value and didn't help its development, the flavor alone made it a treat.

Since the others were getting something extra today, Boldore deserved a little tasty snack too.

Still, Silas hadn't prepared much he only used it occasionally to add a bit of flavor.

"Boldore!"

After absorbing the silver ore, Boldore let out a satisfied call. It knew well enough that this wasn't something it could overindulge in at best, it counted as a light snack.

With a soft grunt indicating it was done, Boldore settled off to the side, curled its body inwards, and began its usual task of standing guard.

Silas felt truly reassured. Among the three Pokémon he had,Boldore was the one he worried about the least. Calm, steady, and well-behaved it was the exact opposite of the other two.

As time passed, the fragrant aroma of Slowpoke tail simmering in the pot began to spread in the air.

A boy, a chicken, and a bird all twitched their noses in sync. What a heavenly smell.

Seeing that it was just about cooked, Silas couldn't wait any longer. He quickly took out three bowls and divided the Slowpoke tail portions evenly.

Blaziken and Pidgeot eagerly walked over and gathered at the dining spot.

Silas took a bite. Oh! Tender, springy, richly flavorful, with a lingering taste that was truly unique. No wonder it had such a reputation.

The two Pokémon let out delighted sighs—it was just too delicious! Immediately, they buried their faces into the bowls.

After finishing off the food quickly, Silas felt like nothing else in the world could compete with what he had just eaten. He was completely satisfied.

He smacked his lips, savoring the taste still lingering in his mouth. In that moment, he made a firm decision: from now on, whenever he came across Slowpoke tails, he would never sell them again. Eating them himself was far too enjoyable. No wonder they weren't commonly available in the market even though they weren't exactly rare.

After trying one for the first time, who could bear to sell it?

Once all the mess was cleaned up, Silas called out to Boldore, and they began heading toward the Pokémon Academy.

He had already made arrangements with the principal to arrive before 3 PM, and there was still a bit of distance left to travel.

Two figures darted through the forest Silas and his Blaziken.

After a long while, they finally stopped outside a towering gate, easily seven to eight meters tall. Looking up, Silas couldn't help but feel a wave of emotion.
