Chapter 5 - Framed

The day had barely begun, but Tara felt the weight of a thousand eyes on her. The city outside was cloaked in gray, cold winds slipping through the cracks of her small apartment window. She moved through her morning routine like a ghost, haunted not just by the shadow trailing her every step, but by the creeping sense that her life was about to change forever.

Her phone buzzed sharply on the kitchen table, jolting her from her thoughts. She grabbed it with trembling hands. A message from an unknown number blinked on the screen: They're coming for you.

Before she could even think to reply, a loud, insistent knock rattled the door. Her heart froze, pounding painfully against her ribs. She peered through the peephole. Two police officers stood there, their faces grim and unreadable.

"Ms. Elwood? We need to speak with you," one said as she cautiously opened the door.

Confusion and fear tangled inside her, but she nodded. "What is this about?"

"We have reason to believe you are involved in an incident of a serious nature. You need to come with us for questioning."

Tara's mind spun. Was this connected to Detective Harris, or was someone else pulling the strings? Her throat tightened as she grabbed her jacket, trying to steady her breath.

At the police station, the sterile lights buzzed overhead, casting stark shadows on the walls. Tara sat stiffly at a metal table, her hands folded tightly. Across from her was Detective Harris, his calm replaced by a cold intensity.

"Ms. Elwood, evidence ties you to the assault on Jessica Monroe."

Jessica Monroe — a name Tara barely knew, a girl found battered in a park just weeks ago. Tara's voice was firm. "I had nothing to do with that."

Harris's eyes never left her. "We're investigating every lead. Your recent actions have attracted attention."

Tara's jaw clenched. "I'm searching for the truth about Maya and the other missing girls. Someone is trying to stop me."

He leaned back, folding his fingers. "If you're innocent, help us find the real culprit."

Outside the station, the news spread fast. Her phone erupted with calls and messages — from worried friends, cold strangers, even classmates who now looked at her with suspicion. Rumors swirled through the college halls: "She's a suspect." "She's dangerous." "Stay away."

Even Jessie hesitated before reaching out.

Are you okay?

Tara stared at the screen, fingers trembling before she typed back: I have to be stronger.

She felt the sting of isolation, as though the world she had known was slipping through her fingers.

That night, when the city's lights dimmed and silence thickened, a soft knock came at her door. Heart pounding, she opened it to find Aaron Blake standing there — tired, serious, but not threatening.

"Why are you here?" Tara asked, wary.

"I know who's trying to frame you," Aaron said quietly. "They don't just want to scare you. They want you gone."

"Why trust you?" Tara's voice was cold but curious.

Aaron hesitated. "Because I don't want to lose anyone else. Maya was a mistake, but you're different. You can help end this."

They talked for hours, piecing together scraps of information. Powerful people with influence in the police force, the university, even city hall, weaving a dangerous web of lies and silence.

Aaron admitted they were outmatched, but Tara felt something else — determination.

Together, they planned. Tara knew running wasn't an option anymore. To survive, to clear her name, and to bring the truth to light, she had to fight with every ounce of her strength.

As midnight deepened, Tara stood by her window, watching the city's flickering lights. Somewhere out there, enemies waited. But she was no longer the frightened girl hiding in shadows.

She was ready.

And she would not be silenced.
