Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Shelter and Curiosity

After leaving the food stall, Sean walked carefully through the streets, clutching his bag tightly. He wasn't used to carrying money—especially not this much.

His sharp eyes scanned the streets until he spotted an old sign hanging above a narrow doorway:

"24-Hour Motel – Affordable Rates."

It wasn't fancy. In fact, it looked almost abandoned from the outside—but to Sean, it meant one thing: shelter.

He checked the price board.

₱450 per night.

Still steep for someone like him—but after what he pulled from the phone, he could afford it now.

"Pahuway sa ko, kay kapoy na kaayo," he muttered under his breath.

("I need to rest. I'm too exhausted.")

Inside, the front desk clerk barely looked up from his radio.

"Room lang, boss. Usa ka gabii," Sean said calmly.

("One room, boss. For one night.")

The man raised an eyebrow but changed his tone quickly when Sean handed over a ₱500 bill.

"Room 7. Tubig ra sa dispenser, ha," the man mumbled, sliding a key toward him.

("Room 7. Water's at the dispenser, okay?")

Sean took the key and quietly climbed the stairs to the second floor.

The room wasn't much—just a thin mattress, a creaky table, and a small, dusty window—but it felt safe enough for now.

Sean locked the door tight and sat heavily on the mattress, pulling out the phone again.

It still looked and acted like a normal phone.

Still no apps.

Still no camera.

Only the Survive browser.

Curious, Sean tapped Survive again.

The browser opened instantly, as usual—no internet needed.

Inside, there was a simple download section with apps listed out neatly. No flashy ads. No complicated menus.

Just a quiet list:

Utube

Facefriend

Toktik

A few basic games.

Sean raised an eyebrow.

"Maka-download ko og apps diri? Bisan walay signal?"

("I can download apps here? Even without signal?")

He didn't understand how it worked—but at this point, he'd seen stranger things already.

He tapped on Utube first.

The download was fast—too fast.

Within seconds, the app installed.

Sean tested it out.

Videos loaded easily.

No lag.

He even searched for familiar topics—martial arts, survival skills, and money-making tricks.

Everything worked fine.

It looked and acted just like any ordinary video app.

"Murag tinuod ra gyud ni nga phone," he muttered to himself, still watching cautiously.

("This really feels like a normal phone.")

Still curious, he browsed the download section again and installed Facefriend and Toktik.

Both worked like any normal social apps.

The phone showed no errors, no strange glitches.

But one thing stayed in the back of his mind—this phone had no SIM card, no Wi-Fi connection, yet it worked like nothing was wrong.

"Nagpa-aktong normal lang ni, pero kabalo ko naa ni'y gitaguan," he whispered.

("It's pretending to be normal, but I know it's hiding something.")

That night, lying on the mattress, Sean scrolled through Toktik to distract himself.

He stumbled across a short clip—simple, quiet.

A girl in a nurse uniform, sitting at a small clinic table, tying her hair back while sipping from a cup of coffee.

Her caption read: "Kapoy pero laban. Para sa mga pasyente."

("Tired but still fighting. For the patients.")

Sean paused.

She wasn't like the others—no filters, no dancing, no loud music.

Just her calm, tired smile.

He watched the clip twice without even realizing it.

"Kinsa man ni siya?"

("Who is this girl?")

Her username was simple: PrettyMeds.

There was something about her that felt… real.

Without thinking, Sean followed her account and saved her video.

"Lahi ra gyud ni siya," he muttered again, frowning slightly.

("She's really different.")

For now, he let the phone rest beside him as he stared at the cracked ceiling.

He still had one remaining heist left today—but tonight, he wasn't interested in that.

His mind stayed on the girl from the clinic.

Pretty.

Somewhere, something inside him was beginning to shift—but he didn't know it yet.
