Chapter 30 - Chapter 29 - Glimpse Of The Future - I

The team stepped out of the Monolith, their hearts heavy with the burden of the Divinitas. As they trudged through the crowded streets of Neo-ilka, Zypher felt an unusual sense of detachment from everything around him, as if they had crossed a boundary few dared to approach. He glanced at his companions, all visibly shaken yet determined, the gravity of their mission casting long shadows over their expressions.

"Do you really think the gods planned all this?" Kiera whispered softly, her gaze darting toward Zypher. "It feels. too much."

Zypher clenched his hand on the pack, where he could feel the thrum of the fragments within. The essence of power and history in them. "The gods made the Divinitas for control, shaping the future," Zypher said. "But we have a choice of what we make of it."

Just as they turned onto one of the bright streets, Nyra froze up, eyes fixed on a huge digital screen hovering above the city square. Breaking news flashed across it like an aftershock wave: pictures of robotic soldiers, dark clouds gathering above the city. The headline spelled it all out: "Automated Armada Assembles—Corporate Giants Launch New Defense Initiative."

Orion frowned and grumbled under his breath. "Businesses are tightening the chokehold. They're prepping for something, and it ain't just for defense."

The realization dawned on their minds at the same time. They had somehow felt that there existed pieces of Divinitas. Any piece they had acquired so far was altering what existed around Zypher and his crew as humanity's ambition fought the divine will.

We have to move quickly, he said, his voice urgent. They won't stop until they've got the Divinitas in their hands. If the corporations or their armies get it. one of those things happens to us: trading one tyranny for another.

They left for a less-noisy part of town, where the illumination of the lights dimmed, and everything was lit up with an otherworldly glow. There, Nyra booted up her console, performing simulations and delving into classified files she had hacked from the Monolith. A holographic image snapped into existence above her screen, flickering and revealing intricate designs of the Divinitas weapon, which rotated slowly, its inner workings exposed in dazzling blue light.

Look at this," Nyra breathed, zooming in on the component, revealing layers of circuits and code, each one tied to a different city grid, almost like the Divinitas was mapped on Neo-ilka's heartbeat. "This is more than a weapon. This is… a blueprint to the future of this city."

The others all pressed in on it, their faces a mix of awe and horror. As Nyra scrolled through the images, the hologram changed, and she saw a glimpse of Neo-ilka if the Divinitas were to be fully activated: skyscrapers standing taller, framed by glowing lines of godly power. The streets below-their rhythms untamed-a stark contrast to the chaotic energy that currently defined the city. A network of robotic enforcers patrolled every street, every alley, to ensure nothing in Neo-ilka was untouched by their control.

"What kind of future is this?" Kiera murmured, gritted her jaw in irritation. "It's a prison."

Exactly, Orion said grimly. "They are taking control. The gods designed this, and the corporations are going to finish it.".

But in this bleak landscape, Zypher saw something else-another path, one less clear, almost invisible, as if it had been rubbed out. He reached out, tracing his finger along the fluttering hologram. Again, the scene changed, and this time, it showed a wholly different vision of Neo-ilka: people going about of their own free will, freed from corporate and divine manipulation. Here technology was no means of control but of liberation. A city where the enslavement was not done by the Divinitas but empowered people to live free like them.

"This is it," Zypher breathed, his eyes bright with revelation. "The Divinitas can change Neo-ilka, yes, but not just as a weapon. It could be the key to real freedom.".

Nyra cocked her head to the side, her fingers tapping thoughtfully on her console. "You're telling me. we're not bound to the gods' designs. We can rewrite them."

Zypher nodded. "The Divinitas is only as powerful as the purpose we give it. We can wield it to protect Neo-ilka, to give people control over their lives. But we have to be willing to defy everything the gods planned for this city.

Orion's face set, his hand instinctively reaching out to the hilt of his weapon. "You know this won't be an easy ride. The corporations, the gods, they won't let change their vision without making a fight of it."

"We're used to it," Kiera replied, a hint of a smile breaking through her tense features. "Besides, this could be our shot, at making things right."

Suddenly, Nyra's console beeped out a warning signal. She pulled up the data in a swift motion, her face growing dark as lines of code streamed across the screen. "We've been tracked," she said tightly. "They're onto us.".

Just as if on cue, a faint rumbling echoed through the streets. Robotic enforcers, metallic limbs shining under neon lights, emerged from the shadows, moving in formation toward their location. These were the corporate elites' newest creations: enhanced targeting machines, built to be faster, stronger, deadlier.

Zypher's heart was thudding. No way out now. "Let's go." he shouted his hand instinctively reaching for his pack feeling the pieces of Divinitas warm faintly. "Stay close and keep it in the alleys. We can't let them get this.".

The team ran, weaving through narrow side streets, dodging the sweeping beams of searchlights overhead. The ground vibrated under the relentless march of robotic soldiers closing in, each step a stark reminder of what they were up against.

They dived through alleys, twisting sharply, dodging into shadows as metal pursuers cut glints of light into the darkness. Zypher's mind ran fast, playing back visions they'd seen--what Neo-ilka might become in some evil's grasp if the Divinitas went astray, what hope was for better if they succeeded.

They soon found themselves face to face with a steel and glass wall, blocking their retreat path to freedom. Before them the mechanized footsteps were growing louder, echoing down the narrow alley.

Orion drew his blade, stance poised ready for battle. "There's no way out," he told Zypher, "but we can give you some time. You grab the Divinitas and get out of here."

"No," Zypher said firmly, looking at her with a decisive glint. "We get out together, or we don't get out at all."

Nyra's eyes kept scanning the tiny clearing in her head. "If we can stall them for just a few seconds, maybe."

Zypher handed her one of the Divinitas shards, this one strong enough to remain potent, he hoped. "Think it will do?"

She grinned darkly, and took the shard into her console. "Only one way to know for sure."

As the first wave of robotic enforcers turned the corner, Nyra fired a burst of data down through the shard. A shockwave of power rolled out from her console, slapping into the lines of robotic soldiers like a quiet pulse. For a second, they stood stiff, their systems sputtering, their lights blinking as they struggled to reboot.

"Now!" Zypher yelled.

The team sprinted over the top of the wall, Zypher yanking his companions up one by one, as the robot soldiers reverted to their purpose, their red sensors locating their prey once again.

Giving one last glance back at their followers, the team took off down a side street as the heart of Neo-ilka's lights faded in the distance. The vision of the Divinitas-the future it could bring, the freedom it promised-spurred them on. Neo-ilka was teetering on the edge, its fate suspended between the power of the gods and the will of the people.
