🕯️ The Unseen Hour
It was just past the second moonrise — when even the flame-lanterns of the Academy flickered uncertainly and shadows stretched longer than they should.
Rael waited beneath the Ashfall Arch, a quiet corner of the outer courtyard. A place forgotten by students, protected by old stone and rune-silenced wards.
He knew she would come.
He'd felt her dream.
Felt her pain.
Felt her flame flicker as if it had nearly gone out.
And then… footsteps.
He didn't turn.
> "You always wait like that," came Lumiera's voice. "Back turned. Like you trust me not to stab you."
"I do," he said softly. "Even if I shouldn't."

🔥 The Past Between Them
She stepped beside him, arms crossed, staring up at the blackened moonlight.
"I saw a throne," she said. "And blood. And… you."
He nodded. "And you were holding the crown."
She flinched. "So it's real."
Rael looked at her now. "You were Elarys. My bride-to-be. And I was to be crowned the day they killed us both."
"They killed you," she said. "I lived."
"Only long enough to die another way."
Silence.
> "Why didn't I save you?" she whispered. "Why do I remember watching you burn?"
Rael swallowed hard.
"Because fate is cruel. But this time… we choose."
---
đź’Ť The Oath Ritual
Rael pulled out two ember stones, glowing faintly red. He set them on the stone plinth before them.
"These were part of the Crownforge," he said. "The flame we were bound by. Now... we use them to seal a new oath."
Lumiera raised a brow. "What kind of oath?"
"One that links us — not as lovers or ghosts of the past, but as allies of flame. Partners. Whatever comes, we rise or fall together."
She stared at the stones.
"If I say no?"
"I won't ask again."
She exhaled slowly.
Then pressed her palm to one stone.
Rael did the same.
---
đź”— The Bond
The stones flared — golden-white and searing — and burned a new sigil into both their wrists. Twisting arcs of the Flamebound Crown, now reshaped with two mirrored embers at its base.
It pulsed.
Their pulses matched.
A single echo passed between their minds.
> "You are not mine. But we are bound."
> "To fire. To memory. To truth."
The oath was sealed.
And a gust of wind scattered the remaining ashes into the sky.
---
⚖️ Eyes in the Dark
Far above, in the rafters of the eastern observatory, two cloaked figures lowered their scry-scopes.
> "They've completed the Ember Oath," one hissed.
> "Strike now?"
> "No. Let the bond strengthen. Then we cut it at the root."
> "And the Second Flame?"
> "We pray to the gods she stays asleep."
The figures vanished in smoke.
---
🧿 The After-Oath
Lumiera sat on the stone ledge, rubbing the still-glowing sigil on her wrist.
"You know this makes me a target now," she muttered. "Everyone will know I'm with you."
Rael sat beside her, quiet.
"Would you prefer to run?"
She smiled wryly. "I've never liked running. Even when I was Elarys… I stood with you. Didn't I?"
"You did."
"So what changed?"
"Only the pain," he said. "Not the heart."

🌕 Closing: The Spark Before the Blaze
In the distance, storm clouds crackled with unnatural lightning. A pulse echoed from beneath the ground — the ancient flame circuits waking once more.
The Academy had no idea how close the old fire had come to breathing again.
But Rael and Lumiera?
They could feel it in their bones.
> A storm was coming.
And they would walk into it — together.
