The rain had no mercy tonight
Cold heavy brutal
Shigure didn't flinch as it soaked into his wounds reopening some of them letting blood leak into the mud at his feet
His breath came out in sharp clouds his hands still trembling from what he had done or maybe from what he hadn't
A child's corpse lay behind him face hidden beneath the shattered mask of one of the hunters
He hadn't meant to kill the boy
But the boy had a knife and eyes that looked like they had never been given the chance to choose mercy
Shigure's sword was slick with guilt
He looked up at the sky eyes unfocused
"Are you watching this?" he muttered
"To whatever god is still laughing out there…do I look like a villain yet?"
There was no answer
Only thunder far off like delayed judgment
He stumbled forward dragging one leg behind him body breaking down but still moving
He didn't want forgiveness
Didn't believe in salvation
But maybe if he kept walking the void would swallow him before anything else could
And until then
He'd kill whatever tried to stop him
