"Yo Kikyo, why are you so quiet? Aren't you comfortable with us?" Kaito asked.
"Uhhmm...it's not that.... I'm just not talkative." She replied.
"Kaito, don't worry, she doesn't talk a lot, but when she tells us her strategies, she becomes really talkative." Alex said.
"Oh, I see,so she's only talkative when she's in her comfort zone." Kaito confirmed.
"Hey Kaito, I heard that you're the famous Demon on the track." Alexis said. "Mind telling us how you got that title?"
"Sure, I'll tell you all about it."
It was Kaito's first year at Tokyo GP Academy, his second term, his skills had already been witnessed by some.
Many were told about them, but many did not believe his skill. One of those people who didn't believe them was a popular boy at his school called Hachi.
Hachi and his friends were considered the best newcomer formular 1 racer, but Kaito's exposure made their popularity and reputation drop, and they were no longer considered the best by some.
Hachi and his friends started ignoring this, but as time passed, it became more of a nuisance, Kaito was starting to become more popular than them.
One day, Hachi and his friends finally decided to take matters into their own hands.
They approached Kaito at the school's exit, after school.
"Yo Kaito,can we have a chat?" Hachi asked.
"Oh, it's you, Hachi. What'd you want, I don't have much time." Kaito responded.
"Man, I have heard people say that you're an egoist, but I didn't think that you had that much ego."
"Just get to the point." Kaito rushed.
"Ok, we're here to challenge you to a race." Hachi challenged.
"Ok, I'm listening." Kaito replied.
"15 laps around this school's training course, you, me, my friends, and other racers. The maximum amount is 10, since you, me and my friends make 7, I'll invite others." Hachi explained.
"The loser between the two of us will have to make a public announcement. He will publicly admit that the other is better." Hachi continued.
"Oh, I see, you want to increase your reputation. I'll accept the challenge, so when is the race?" Kaito asked.
"The race is tomorrow after school."
"I couldn't have asked for a better time." Kaito agreed, and then he left.
The matchday came, Kaito walked to the training course, but then he saw everybody in the school except for the teachers.
'What the! he invited everyone?' Kaito wondered.
"Shocked are we, I invited the whole school, do the lover will admit right here right now after the race." Hachi said, appearing from behind Kaito.
Kaito made a huge smirk, and then he said, "Yes, yes, yes. I'm so excited about this, I couldn't have asked for a better race."
He and Hachi then went to get their cars. The racers went to their positions.
Hachi was at P4, and Kaito was at P9.
Three.. two... one... green!
Vroom! Vroom! Vroom! The race began.
The shouts of the audience filled the air.
"Now, this will be an interesting race." A person who just had appointed himself as the commentator said through the microphone.
Lap 1...
Hachi wasted no time. He zoomed past everyone in front of him and became no.1, but Kaito was still no.9.
"Wow, Hachi easily passed through everyone and reached the spot no.1. He isn't playing around people."
Lap 6...
Hachi was disappointed by the fact that Kaito was still at no.9, but that worked in his favor as well.
Lap 12...
Hachi was convinced that he had already won,but then Kaito finally made a move.
He pressed his accelerator and Vroom! In an instant, he was no.5.
"Woooow! Did you see that, Kaito just reached position 5 like it's nothing."
"He finally made a move. Well, it's a little too late." Hachi said.
Lap 13...
Kaito revved his engine. It roared like a lion. He then set his eyes in first place.
He took turn 5, a turn that made everybody struggle, but he did it like it was nothing and used it to close the distance.
Hachi decided to look at his side window and Boom! He got the shock of his life.
Kaito was right next to him.
"Unbelievable!!! Kaito went from no.9 to no.2 in a matter of two laps, and now he's neck and neck with Hachi, wheel to wheel. This is unbelievable! Kaito is a demon. He is a demon on the track."
Hachi locked his eyes on Kaito, Kaito looked to the side and saw it. He saw Hachi's pissed expression, and he couldn't help but smirk.
They both took turn 6 and were a distance apart from everybody else.
Hachi refused to be beaten by Kaito. Otherwise, he would have to humiliate himself to everyone at school.
He hit his accelerator and increased his speed from 189km/h-210km/h. That was the limit he could control, and that amount was considered extraordinary for a newcomer.
Hachi sprinted and left Kaito in the dust.
"Wow! Hachi increased his speed, I guess that's it for Kaito."
Lap 14...
Kaito stopped playing around with Hachi and increased his speed from 189km/h-250km/h.
Vroooooooooooom!!! Kaito dashed towards Hachi.
Hachi heard the sounds of an engine and looked at his side window. He was shocked, and his expression was like WTF!!!
Hachi did not allow Kaito to get past him easily. He revved his engine to a level he could not control,he increased his speed to 250km/h.
The race turned to a cat and mouse chase, with Kaito as the cat, and Hachi the mouse.
Kaito increased his speed further to 270km/h, Hachi was still barely able to maintain control of his car, but then he made turn and lost control of it.
Kreeeeeeeee!! He tried to break, but it was certain he was going to crash.
"Hachi has taken a bad turn. He's gonna crash!"
The whole crowd were on their feet, and their gasps filled the course.
Hachi was about to crash, but then Kaito appeared, and he hit Hachi's car back on course, and the speed decreased.
Kaito made the distance between the two of them irrecoverable.
Hachi, who was still on the race and was no.2, he returned his car back to the speed he could maintain. He already gave up on winning the race and accepted defeat.
"Kaito, he really is a demon, a demon on the track." He admitted
Kaito finished lap 15 and officially won the race.
The crowd cheered and shouted Kaito! Kaito! Kaito!
"Unbelievable, Kaito defied all odds. He went from no.9 to no.1 in a matter of minutes. It is so unreal. He is a demon on the track!!" The commentator exclaimed.
Kaito got out of his car, and the crowd went wild. A few seconds later, Hachi reached the finish line as well.
"Congratulations on your victory, Kaito, and thanks for saving me." He said.
"Don't worry about that." Kaito replied.
After a few minutes, every other racer reached the finish line, and it was the time for Hachi to honor his promise.
He went up to the commentator's place and took his mic.
"I Hachi would like to declare that Kaito is the best newcomer formular racer in this school, and he is a demon on the track." Hachi declared.
"And that's how I got the name, Demon on the track." Kaito said as he finished his explanation.
The others were dazzled by Kaito's story.
"Yo Kaito, I see that you were getting along with your teammates."
Kaito and the others looked at the direction of the door to identify the host of the voice that had just appeared.
It was their boss. "Kaito, come with me to my office." He said.
Kaito, without asking any questions, followed his master to his office. When he got there, the boss allowed him to take a seat.
The air was silent for a moment until the boss took out an A4 brown envelope.
He opened it and took out a white paper, then handed it to Kaito.
"This is your contract, and please read it carefully before signing." The boss said.
Kaito did as he was told. He thoroughly and carefully analyzed it, and after a few moments, he took the pen from the boss's desk and was about to sign until he hesitated.
He stopped for a while, he placed the pen back to the desk, and reread the contract, it turned out that he missed a page, and it held the most important information.
He took a deep breath in and asked, "Is this some sort of joke?"
"What are you talking about?" The boss asked.
"I mean this part, this part of the contract that says, 'You will only participate if Shinji is injured, not present, not feeling up to the challenge or when he asked you to race.' Please tell me what this joke is!!" He shouted.
"Kaito, I advise you to stay calm." The boss replied.
Kaito cooled down his anger. He took more breaths in and out, and then he asked again, "What is this? This rule, this just means that I don't matter, I'm like a substitute."
"I was expecting that we would switch. For example, the first race would be him, and the next would be me." Kaito added.
"Sadly, you are right. You are like a substitute. Shinji is our maim driver, you are a good driver but you are not in his league." The boss stated.
"Then I'm going to learn. If I'm not in his league, I'll learn through the field, and I'll get better and better." Kaito fought.
"Please, Kaito, do not make this harder. I knew that you'll react this way, which is why I'll allow you to take your time and think about it." The boss suggested.
"One day to think this through, then sure I will." Kaito responded.
He walked out of the office, and after a few seconds, he followed.
Everybody was so eager to see Kaito return from the boss's office as a full member of their team, but all of them were not ready to see him come out as down as he was.
"Hey, Kaito, what's wrong?" They asked.
Kaito responded with a simple, "Don't worry, it's nothing." And he left.
"I knew that old fart of our boss must've messed things up." Shinji said.
"You know I'm not really old." The boss responded.
"Boss, what did you do?" Alexis asked.
"I just wrote that he'll only be a substitute for Shinji that all. But don't worry, he'll be fine."
