"Does that mean you saved me? Thank you… if you did. I'm really grateful," Kane said, then looked around. "But… where am I?"
"You're in my house," Maria replied.
"I was in the forest… that's the last thing I remember. I fell into a river… and… I fell into a river…" Kane repeated, still disoriented.
"No, you're not in the forest anymore. You're in the city… in my grandpa's house," Maria told him.
Kane pulled the bedsheet off and slowly sat up, placing his feet on the ground. Then he stood.
Maria shifted back. What's going on? What does he want to do? she wondered.
"Thank you for all you've done for me. I don't know how to repay you… but I'm going to have to take my leave," Kane said.
As he tried to walk, pain shot through his chest and muscles. He bent forward, groaning.
"Ahh…"
Maria quickly stepped closer. "Please… you can rest. Your body is healing on its own, but it looks like you haven't fully recovered. Please, just rest. I… I don't know what you are… I'm not even sure if you're human," Maria said quietly.
"Thank you very much. I think I'm still a little bit weak," he said, then got up and sat back down. "So this is where humans stay," he said curiously as he sat on the bed.
Maria didn't understand what he meant. One thing she knew was that he wasn't human, but somehow, she wasn't that scared of him.
Then she replied, "Yes, this is where the humans stay. Where are you from, and who are you?"
"Well, I won't tell you that."
That was when they started to hear footsteps. Then someone kicked the door.
It was Kenny.
"Maria!" Grandpa shouted. He held a large gun and pointed it at Kane. "Maria, get back! Go away, Maria!"
Then Maria said, "Grandpa, Grandpa, Grandpa, keep the gun down. It's fine. It was me that invited him."
Kane was out of order. He didn't know what to do. He was wondering if he had done anything wrong, and he knew it was wrong to be in a stranger's house, but he just didn't move or say anything.
Kane understood something. When he came here, he noticed—because even if he wasn't allowed to come out of the castle back when he was still in the werewolf clan—there were times during the war… There was a time when there was still war between werewolves and vampires. Five years ago, he knew he had killed a vampire, and he knew what vampire blood felt like.
But now, he was confused as he looked at Maria. He wasn't sure if she was a vampire or another kind of creature. He had never met a human before, so he wasn't sure.
Kane could tell—he knew Maria had vampire blood. He also knew what human blood felt like, because he had some in him too. When he looked at the old man pointing his worn-out gun at him, he knew right away—he was a full human.
But what Kane couldn't understand was… what was a vampire doing here?
