Chapter 9 – Echoes of Saltspire
Saltspire still smoldered behind them.
The trail they carved through the outskirts was marked by blood, shattered bone, and the charred remains of those foolish enough to hunt them. Kael's small warband moved like phantoms through the dusk—swift, silent, deadly.
No one spoke of the escape. Not yet. The wounds were too fresh.
Kael led them deeper into the ravaged hills that once bordered the coastal provinces. The air here was thick with ash and static, the scent of ozone mingling with the acrid burn of scorched alloy. Serrin walked beside him, glancing back at the twenty-one hybrids as they followed.
Some limped. Others bore deep wounds. But they moved with purpose.
Kael's eyes swept the landscape. He had one destination in mind—a forgotten cliffside installation known in older Codex records as Kovarra's Teeth. If the intel held true, it had once been a listening post, abandoned after the central AI fell silent. Now, it was a corpse waiting to be picked.
"Will it shelter us?" Serrin asked.
"For now," Kael replied. "Long enough to plan the next move."
They arrived by dusk.
The structure was partially buried beneath volcanic debris, its jagged towers bent inward like broken fingers. But Kael's Codex pulsed faintly in acknowledgment. This place still held echoes of its past—energy conduits, sealed armories, long-dormant emergency systems.
Inside, dust-coated terminals flickered to life. Serrin immediately set to work, tapping into power nodes, siphoning data. The hybrids filed in slowly, cautious, their animal instincts still half-wild from the fighting dens.
Kael stood in the main chamber, gaze falling over the group.
He didn't need to speak their names again.
They were no longer the nameless beasts from the pits.
The world would soon learn their names—Dreadmaw, Ironmark, Whisper-Vow—and tremble at what they'd become.
During their escape, they had stumbled across a supply cache hidden in the collapsed vaults of the Saltspire underlevels—a forgotten stash of Echo-tier weaponry and biotech augmenters, most likely left behind by deserters.
Kael hadn't wasted the opportunity.
Now, as they stabilized within the Kovarra ruins, the upgrades were distributed to the three who had bled hardest during their breakout.
Dreadmaw, his jaws reconstructed with reinforced synthbone and his forelimbs armored with burst pistons, stood like a siege engine incarnate.
Ironmark, the former shield unit, now bore a shoulder array capable of magnetic redirection—capable of absorbing and displacing impact force across his entire unit.
Whisper-Vow, slightest of the three, received internal neuro-filters and cloaking glands. Her new shadow-step ability rendered her near-invisible for up to ten seconds in direct light.
Rask, still unconscious and healing under Serrin's watchful eye, would receive his upgrade once stabilized. His breathing had evened out. Kael knew he would rise again.
Later that night, Kael stood at the fractured balcony of the listening post, watching the stars claw their way through the black.
Serrin approached, arms crossed. "You're not sleeping."
"I don't sleep well with ghosts behind me."
Serrin leaned against the wall. "You mean the past? Or the ones in the room behind us?"
Kael gave a small smile. "Both."
He turned to face the dark.
"We need to expand. Territory. Resources. Intel."
"You're forming a kingdom in the shadows of giants, Kael."
"Then I'll burn the giants until their shadows vanish."
