Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: His Eyes Burned Through Me

The 62nd floor of Windsor Industries was silent when I walked in. My heels echoed off marble floors. The receptionist stared. I knew why.

James Windsor was waiting for me in his glass office.

Powerful. Untouchable. And staring at the skyline like it owed him everything.

"Miss Blake," he said without turning. "You're late."

"Seven years late," I replied, stepping in. "What's ten minutes more?"

He turned. Our eyes met. My breath caught.

Gone was the boy with cheeky smiles. This man could break hearts with a glance.

"I wasn't sure you'd show up," he said.

"I don't run away anymore."

He chuckled. "You're different."

"And you're richer."

He smirked. "Dangerous combination, isn't it?"

We talked business. Barely. His eyes kept drifting. And mine… couldn't stop remembering the way he used to make me laugh.

But this wasn't the past.

This was a new game. One we hadn't learned how to play yet.

He stepped closer, voice low.

"You know hiring you might've been the worst idea of my life."

"Why?"

"Because I'm not sure I'll be able to pretend I don't want you."

My heart skipped.

But I didn't flinch.

"Try harder, Mr. Windsor."

I turned and walked out, ignoring the pounding in my chest.

I had survived heartbreak once.

I wouldn't survive falling again.
