Chapter 1 - A Life-Changing Accident

"Fang Zhiyan, sigh, undergraduate?"

"No, who brought him in for the interview? Our People's Hospital is, after all, a Grade Three Class B hospital."

"Bringing in a freshly graduated undergraduate, isn't that just wasting my time?"

"Next!"

Inside the People's Hospital of Jiang'an City, Donghai Province, Fang Zhiyan slowly raised his head, a hint of sadness flashing in his eyes.

Across from him sat several examiners from the hospital.

The one speaking was Du Yu, the head of the emergency department.

At that moment, he cast a frustrated glance at Fang Zhiyan and waved dismissively.

Beside him, someone spoke apologetically, "I'm sorry, although your interview scores are excellent, your educational background and graduate school don't meet the requirements for our positions."

"I suggest you look at community hospitals instead."

Hearing this, Fang Zhiyan let out a sigh. He wanted to plead further since he desperately needed a job to support his family.

"I know my educational background is a bit lacking, but my abilities are definitely not inferior to others. Is there any way?"

"Can't you understand plain language? Your education is insufficient and doesn't meet our criteria. Out! Next!"

Du Yu raised his head again, his temper flaring up further, and his cold gaze shattered any remaining hope Fang Zhiyan had.

He thanked them quietly and turned to leave.

Unfortunately, he could still hear Du Yu's voice from behind.

"No wonder he has a low education, he can't even understand what I'm saying. I told him he doesn't qualify, and he still talks nonsense!"

Fang Zhiyan bit his lip as he stepped out of the People's Hospital.

Although the hospital was merely a Grade Three Class B facility, it was the best hospital in a fourth-tier city like Jiang'an.

Yet even in a fourth-tier city, this hospital was unwilling to hire an ordinary medical undergraduate.

He sighed again and hurried on to the next hospital.

Watching the buildings of the early 21st century flash by outside the window, he felt a surreal sense of displacement.

Because just yesterday, he was a renowned medical giant, widely regarded as a surgical master, having published countless papers in top medical journals across the globe, pioneering numerous surgical techniques!

Yet now, he had somehow crossed over into 2007 as an average doctor.

Not only had his name changed to Fang Zhiyan, but his educational qualifications had also been reduced to that of a mere ordinary undergraduate in medicine.

The original owner had died due to an electrical accident while boiling water with an electrical kettle.

All Fang Zhiyan could do now was to live in place of the original owner.

To say the original owner was a man of some merit, he was the third child in the family, with an elder brother and sister of different mothers above him, and a younger sister below.

His mother, Jiang Xu, was the second wife of his father, Fang Jianjun.

As for the first wife, she had given Fang Jianjun a son and a daughter before fleeing due to domestic violence.

Fang Zhiyan and his younger sister, Fang Zhixia, were children of Jiang Xu.

However, their life in the Fang family was far from pleasant.

His father was an alcoholic who became increasingly abusive after marrying Jiang Xu. He not only beat his wife but also insisted that she take on all household chores and cooking for the entire family.

This included washing and preparing meals for the eight family members, namely the grandparents and the parents.

Even so, she had to endure her mother-in-law's constant criticism and the taunts of her elder children.

In the end, because she failed to attend to her mother-in-law's needs, the old lady hit her with a stool, leaving her bloodied.

It was precisely for this reason that after graduating from university, the original owner had a huge fallout at home, resolutely separating from the family and taking his mother and sister away from that place.

If they didn't leave, who knows what day his mother and sister would be beaten to death or starved?

Originally, the mother was against separating.

If they split, they would have nowhere to live and no food to eat.

The only reason the original owner could attend university in such a family environment was that his mother worked tirelessly sewing quilts and doing needlework.

In addition, her father occasionally gave them money, and a teacher who spent his own money to pay for the original owner's tuition continually encouraged him to pursue his education.

Finally, some compassionate neighbors pooled together to fund the original owner's medical education for five years.

After enduring hardships and working part-time jobs during his studies, the original owner eventually graduated.

He had thought life would be better afterward, but as an ordinary medical undergraduate, he could not find a decent job.

In fact, he couldn't even afford to rent a place on his own; that was all helped by his good brother, Lu Mingtang.

This left him feeling incredibly discouraged.

Ultimately, while boiling water with that electric kettle one fateful moment, he accidentally touched an exposed socket, and—just like that—he was gone.

Fortunately, he crossed over and took the place of the original owner.

Once assuming another's identity, he also had to bear that identity's responsibilities.

The previous Fang Zhiyan had died, and the new one had begun to live.

As such, he had decided to take care of the original owner's family.

Thus, Fang Zhiyan embarked on a quest for job interviews.

Yet the original owner's resume was disappointingly weak.

An ordinary medical undergraduate?

Originally, he had graduated from the Second Medical College of Donghai Province, while his peers were interning at the Second Hospital of Donghai.

But for some unknown reason, he failed to make the cut and could only return to his hometown in Jiang'an to try their hospitals.

However, the People's Hospital still rejected him, adding a few additional jabs for good measure.

Yet, Fang Zhiyan remained undeterred. He knew that the past experience was merely the original owner's.

He himself, in his previous life, was a surgical master who had pioneered countless surgical techniques and published papers in numerous top-tier journals.

If he was given just one opportunity, he could surely shine.

What he lacked now was that opportunity.

So, he turned and headed straight for the Jiang'an Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital.

Historically, TCM hospitals had primarily focused on traditional medicine, but with the rise of Western medicine, Jiang'an's TCM hospital had undergone reform.

While retaining its signature TCM departments, it also incorporated many Western medical diagnostic and treatment techniques.

This made it quite similar to the People's Hospital.

Moreover, the original owner's grandfather was a village doctor specializing in traditional medicine.

Thus, Fang Zhiyan hoped to find luck at the TCM hospital.

But as the saying goes, 'the best plans of mice and men often go awry.'

After assessing Fang Zhiyan's situation carefully, the TCM hospital's chief examiner, He Dongfang, put on a resigned smile.

"You've got strong abilities, young man."

"But unfortunately, your hard criteria just don't meet standard requirements. I can't change that; it's hospital policy."

"Perhaps you could check out a community hospital or a clinic?"

Hearing this, Fang Zhiyan let out a soft breath.

Another failure.

He stood up with a bitter smile, preparing to leave.

Behind him, He Dongfang sighed sympathetically.

If the TCM hospital wouldn't accept him, then where could he go? Was he really forced to resort to a community hospital?

Those places hardly paid anything; there was no way he could support his family with a salary like that.

Stepping out of the administrative building, Fang Zhiyan meandered through the newly reformed TCM hospital, a pensive expression hovering on his face.

Just as he pondered his next move, a sudden commotion erupted from the nearby emergency hall.

"Quick! Open the emergency access!"

"We've got another truck full of casualties!"

"A car accident nearby—most of the patients are being dispatched to our hospital. Everyone available, move now!"

Fang Zhiyan stood outside the emergency hall and watched as victims flooded the corridors.

Patients in varying degrees of danger were placed in different sections.

Many were crying out in agony, their screams heartbreaking and desperate.

Blood, broken bones, and other fluids were everywhere.

This was a major automobile accident!

Perhaps due to the emergency department's recent establishment, they were short-staffed; even the interns were being pulled to the front lines.

Moreover, none possessed practical experience in handling such situations, leaving them flustered.

What a pity! If it were him…

Wait a second!

Fang Zhiyan lifted his head.

Though he didn't hold a practicing physician's license, he had the skills and experiences from his past life as a surgical master.

Handling such chaos was not difficult for him.

Even saving just one more person would make a difference.

Most importantly, this was an opportunity to prove himself!

The place he was currently renting was funded by his brother, Lu Mingtang!

Fang Zhiyan urgently needed a chance!

With this thought, he gritted his teeth and boldly walked forward.
