Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Into the Unknown

The rift loomed before the Heavenly Dragon Pavilion like a wound in reality, its edges crackling with chaotic resonance energy. Li Luo stood at the forefront of the expedition team, his triple resonance palaces humming in sync with the rift's strange pulse. Beside him, Jiang Qing'e's light resonance cast a steady glow, illuminating the tense faces of their allies: Lu Qing'er, her ice resonance shimmering faintly; Cai Wei, her earth resonance grounding the group's nerves; and Zhao Chen, the enigmatic rogue cultivator, whose chaotic aura flickered like a storm on the verge of breaking.

Elder Weng activated the resonance array, a complex lattice of jade runes that stabilized the rift's volatile energy. "This will hold the passage open for three days," he warned. "After that, you're on your own. Find the source of the disturbance and return swiftly."

Li Luo nodded, his silver hair catching the rift's eerie light. "We'll be back before you know it, Elder." His voice carried confidence, but his primal resonance stirred uneasily, whispering of dangers beyond the veil.

Qing'e's hand brushed his, a silent promise. "Let's go," she said, her voice calm but resolute.

With Zhao Chen leading, the team stepped into the rift. The world twisted around them, space and time folding in a dizzying cascade of colors—azure, emerald, and that unsettling black. Li Luo's water resonance surged instinctively, shielding his mind from the chaos. Moments later, they emerged on the other side, staggering onto a cracked, desolate plain under a fractured sky.

The Origin Continent.

The air was thick with raw resonance energy, so dense it pressed against their skin like a living thing. Jagged peaks loomed in the distance, their surfaces etched with glowing runes that pulsed in rhythm with the ground's faint tremors. Strange plants, their leaves shimmering with elemental sparks, swayed without wind. Above, the sky churned with storms of clashing resonances—fire, ice, and shadow dancing in endless conflict.

"This place…" Lu Qing'er murmured, her breath frosting the air. "It's like the world's resonances were born here."

"They were," Zhao Chen said, his gold-and-black eyes scanning the horizon. "The Origin Continent is the cradle of all resonances. Every element, every palace, traces back to this land. But it's also a graveyard. Stay sharp."

Cai Wei knelt, pressing a hand to the ground. Her earth resonance hummed, sensing the terrain. "The energy here is unstable. It's like walking on a volcano ready to erupt."

Li Luo's primal resonance thrummed, drawn to the continent's raw power. It felt like a call, a distant echo of the vision he'd seen—his parents battling a vortex of chaos. "Zhao Chen," he said, "where do we start?"

The rogue cultivator pointed toward a distant ruin, its spires barely visible through a haze of resonance mist. "That's the Temple of the First Idol. Old texts say it's where the Idol Kings forged the first resonances. If your answers are anywhere, it's there."

Before they could move, a low growl rumbled through the plain. The ground split, and a massive beast emerged—a resonance beast, its body a grotesque fusion of stone, flame, and shadow. Its eyes glowed with primal hunger, and its aura rivaled a mid-stage Duke.

"Welcome to the Origin Continent," Zhao Chen quipped, drawing a jagged blade that crackled with chaotic energy. "These things don't play nice."

Qing'e's light resonance flared, a radiant sword forming in her hand. "Stay in formation," she commanded, her voice cutting through the beast's roar. "Li Luo, take the lead."

Li Luo grinned, his water resonance surging. "Just like old times." He summoned the Heavenly Dragon's Resonance Blade, its edge shimmering with the power of his triple palaces. His wood resonance coiled around the team, forming a protective barrier of verdant vines, while his primal resonance pulsed, amplifying his senses.

The beast charged, flames erupting from its maw. Li Luo met it head-on, his blade slicing through the fire with water-infused precision. Qing'e flanked it, her light sword carving arcs of brilliance that seared the beast's hide. Lu Qing'er unleashed a torrent of ice, slowing its movements, while Cai Wei's earth resonance raised spikes to trap its legs.

Zhao Chen darted through the chaos, his blade leaving trails of discordant energy. With a flick of his wrist, he struck the beast's core, and it shattered into fragments of resonance energy, dissolving into the air.

"Not bad," Zhao Chen said, wiping his blade. "You lot might survive a day here."

Li Luo sheathed his weapon, catching his breath. The fight had been brief, but the beast's raw power was a warning. "That was just a welcoming party. What else is out here?"

Zhao Chen's smirk faded. "Resonance beasts are the least of it. The Idol Kings' remnants—echoes of their will—guard the temples. And then there's the Origin itself. It's alive, in a way. It tests those who tread its soil."

As they trekked toward the temple, the continent's energy pressed harder, tugging at their resonance palaces. Li Luo felt his primal resonance stir again, a faint vision flickering—a woman's voice, Tantai Lan's, whispering, "The Origin must be guarded, not claimed." He stumbled, Qing'e steadying him.

"Another vision?" she asked, her golden eyes searching his.

He nodded, voice low. "My mother. She said the Origin can't be claimed. What were they protecting?"

Qing'e's expression softened. "We'll find out. But focus on the now. This place is dangerous."

The temple loomed closer, its spires carved with colossal statues of robed figures, their faces eroded but radiating ancient power. The air grew heavier, laced with a resonance that felt… sentient. Zhao Chen halted, his hand raised.

"Something's watching," he said. "Get ready."

Before Li Luo could respond, the ground quaked, and a shadow coalesced before the temple's gates—a humanoid figure wreathed in black resonance, its eyes glowing with countless sparks. It was the same silhouette from the pavilion's projection.

"Children of the new era," it intoned, its voice a chorus of resonances, "you tread where mortals fall. Prove your worth, or join the forgotten."

The figure raised a hand, and the statues stirred, their stone bodies cracking as resonance energy flooded them. Li Luo gripped his blade, his primal resonance roaring to life.

"Looks like we've got a test," he said, glancing at Qing'e. Her smile was fierce, her light resonance blazing.

"Then let's pass it," she replied.

As the statues lunged, the team braced for battle, the Origin Continent's secrets waiting just beyond the gates.
