Synopsis
Jax Ray, the second oldest of Bucky Ray's boys, was a walking contradiction. At sixteen, he was brilliant, easily one of the smartest kids at school, but the classroom was his personal purgatory. He'd been on the brink of expulsion more times than his parents cared to count, preferring the wide-open spaces of the Triple R. At the ranch, he was "good as gold," a natural hand who absorbed knowledge like a sponge. He looked up to his older brother, Logan, for guidance, especially when school felt like a trap. Homeschooling wasn't an option; his parents, Bucky and Ali, were too deeply entrenched in the daily demands of running the ranch to manage it. Across town, Mikayla was hoping for a fresh start. As the oldest of three, her life had been marked by early loss; her mother had died when Mikayla was very young. Now, her world included a stepmother, Katherine, and two younger twin brothers, alongside her steadfast dad. The move to Marshall was supposed to wipe the slate clean, to offer a new beginning away from whatever ghosts lingered in their old town. How do Jax and Mikayla first encounter each other, given their different circumstances and personalities? Does their meeting happen at school, in town, or perhaps through some unexpected event related to their families?

Chapter 1 - New school

Jax's POV

"Mr. Ray, I hope you enjoy your suspension." The principal told me for the eighth time this year. My dad came in a few seconds later. More chores for me. I don't care about getting extra chores, is the grounding I get with it.

"Your return date is the Thursday before Halloween." He told me as he pointed me out. I stood and walked out. The door closed behind me before I plopped down in a seat I've known since the first trip to the principal's office last year.

The last few times, it was my uncles who came to the school because I was suspended again. I watched as everything went by as if I weren't in the office.

A girl came in with a man. I watched as an office aide helped her out with her schedule and everything.

October 17, 2041

A woman showed me to the second class listed on my schedule. She knocked on the door before entering. She then ushered me into the room and stood close to the door.

"Mrs. Suse, this is Mikayla Zucker. She will be joining your class." She told the teacher. "Well then, find a seat. We're just reviewing for a test tomorrow." The teacher said as she turned back.

I found a seat in the back of the room away from most of the teens. Once the class was over, I stood and followed the rest of the class. I looked down at my schedule to see where I would go next.

"Follow me, sweetheart." I looked up to see a guy. "Luckily, we have most of the classes together." He said as I followed him down the hall.

Once the day was over, I waited for my dad to pick me up at four. A girl came up and sat down beside me. "You're new." She said as she plopped down.

I looked up from my phone after not thinking she was talking to me. I pointed at myself. She nodded. "You're the only new kid here, so." She said.

"Oh, where are my manners? I must have left them at home. I'm Ginger." She said. "Mikayla," I said, introducing myself. She said that we had the same first class, so just look for her tomorrow morning.

My dad pulled up on time. "I'll see you tomorrow," I told her. As I approached my dad's truck, my stepmother rolled the window down. Dad let her drive it?

I got in the passenger seat after seeing that my brothers were already in the back. "How was your day, boys?" I asked as I buckled.

"I don't know anyone," Caleb replied. "There's a boy in my class named Ridge," Cody told me. "That's cool. Did he introduce himself to you?" I asked.

"Yeah. His dad owns a really big ranch called Rockin' Rays," He told me. "That's cool," I replied. My stepmother and their mother rolled their eyes. Once home, I helped the boys with their homework before doing my own.

I greeted dad and cooked supper because the stepmother was too lazy to cook. So I fixed something four out of five loved. I fixed five plates and called the family.

We sat down at the table together. Caleb is to my right, and Cody is across from both of us. Dad sat at the head of the table between Cody and me.

"Mikayla, would you pray tonight?" Dad asked. "Over this disgusting meal?" Katharine complained. "Yes, sir," I answered dad.

I prayed for the meal, and we dug in. "I think you made it taste better this time than you have in the past," Dad commented. "I'm going to fix myself something else," Katharine said.

"There's nothing wrong with it. Besides, there's nothing else to fix." He told her. "Well, this is trash." She told him.

I jumped up. "Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you have to eat. You're the one who was too lazy to cook. You need to get a job to help pay for all of the food you eat sitting on your arse all day. Then maybe we'd have food. Oh, wait, you'd slack off the job and get fired before you even get started. I'm surprised you're not five times your weight." I told her.

She glared at me. Then broke into tears right in front of my dad. "Oh, Case, are you going to let her talk about me like that?" She whined.

"She's got a point, Kat. You do need to start making money around here to eat." He told her. "Mikayla, sit down and eat. If your stepmother does not like what you made, she can go to bed. The rest of us enjoyed the meal." Dad added.

I sat back down and finished. Once I was done, I rinsed my plate and set it in the sink. Then went for a shower. I got out and brushed my hair after dressing in my night clothes.

Jax's POV

I finished mucking the stalls out for the night and fed all of the horses. Then went to my house for supper and a shower.

When I got to the front porch, I pulled my boots off and went inside. "Straight to the shower, mister," Mom told me. I got a shower and went back downstairs. "Bed with you." Mom said as I came into the kitchen.

"I'll do dishes," I told her. "What is it you did this time?" She asked. "Almost made the teacher's desk collapse. I only took one bolt out to fix it, but Alex had to take multiples and then blamed it on me." I told her.

"Why do you hang out with those boys?" She asked. "I don't know," I told her as I started scrubbing plates. "Jax, you and I both know you're not like that. Stay away from those boys and you won't get into so much trouble." She told me.

"I know, but how. They think they just have to sit by me. I don't want to sit next to Eric or even be around him either." I replied. "Then sit next to Ginger. You know she won't bother you. And if those boys go around her, her boyfriend will be sitting right in front of her."

"That's what I'm worried about. He can whoop me."
