Chapter 1 - Unfortunate Death

The moon was high in the sky. The entire city was completely silent, in one of the many offices there was one where the light was still on, a thirty years old man ( that looked like he was forty ) was inside that room walking around the office moving towers of paper and organising them, that man was me.

I was working some night shifts in order to get some extra cash, I needed it, I had a massive debt to pay, that goddamn debt that my parents left to me after they died, I never knew them since they abandoned me in front of a church just a couple of hours after I was born, but my great luck was such that the usurer they made a contract with found me as their only relative alive, as if that wasn't enough, the massive loan they took was so they could spend it all on a trip to Vegas, I wanted to get out of that situation, but that usurer isn't exactly a great citizen, now I had to cover the entire debt plus the interest.

Looking around the office I felt lonely, all my co-workers had long since left and I was completely alone, even the night guard left leaving me the keys asking me to close everything once I finished, looking at the mirror next to me for a second I couldn't believe what I saw, a fat, almost bald hunched man, my once bright green eyes were long gone, my back became hunched after working without pause in that damn office for an eternity, years of abuse in that damn church, a terrible health and horrible choices made me turn into that man, the man I that I found so disgusting.

I was so tired that the only thing that kept me awake was the massive doses of caffeine that I gulped every ten minutes it was a miracle I didn't die yet from a heart attack, I almost completely drained the coffee machine, thank god I was near the end, once finished I was free to go home and sleep in my terrible tiny apartment.

Thinking about how my life would continue, about how much pain I would have continued to suffer in order to pay for a debt that I didn't even start, I stopped for a moment, maybe it wasn't worth all that effort, maybe if I simply escaped to another country and changed my name the usurer could not find me and I wouldn't have to pay for that massive debt.

Slowly I realised that even those distant illusions were only a waste of time, the faster I finished the faster I could go home, sometimes dreams are only dreams and the only way to create a better future is to focus on the present.

After another hour I organised everything, every single paper was positioned in its right place and all the archives were ready to be utilised by the legal section, all the work I had to do was because those jerks can't even start to put the papers in the right places as the only thing they do all day is lose time, I could probably do their 'job' better than them.

I slowly closed every door and exited the building, looking outside now I could see that the sun was already starting to slowly come out, maybe I lost slightly the sense of time there, my eyes felt heavier with each passing second.

Seeing at how it was only the tip that was rising I hypothesized that if I ran home I could get around two to three hours of sleep before getting ready to work again, a short sleep was awaiting me, better than nothing.

I hurriedly began to walk down the street, the bus stop was near and soon the bus would have passed by that stop, I already memorised every bus stop for emergencies, I wasn't really smart, but at least I was ready for any inconvenience.

As I walked I began hearing incomprehensible screams of a man and a woman coming from above me, I stopped for a moment, curiosity got the better of me, focusing on the scream I slowly understood that they were a couple fighting over a betrayal, from the distance I could determine that they lived in an apartment two or three floors above the street, they soon began launching things to each other, plates, vases and other furniture.

Maybe it wasn't the case for me to stay and listen more of that, just as I tried to walk away I heard a strange noise *fisssh* and then *tunk* no more, all that I saw was black.

When I slowly regained my vision I saw myself at my feet, near my lifeless body a broken ceramic pot, no one wandered the streets at those hours so no one called the ambulance and all I could do was seeing as my body continued to spill blood on the sidewall, my despair soon turned into depression and then in acceptance, my great luck had the better of me, again.

"Ahhhhh...It seems curiosity really kills the cat" that was the only thing I had the will to say, I didn't know if I should have cried for my death or simply be happy for not having to pay for that debt anymore.

It seemed the couple thrown a pot out the windowthat with my luck ended up landing right on my head bashing my skull and killing me on the instant, at least I didn't suffer, indeed what an unfortunate death.
