Episode 28: The Programmed Heart

---

The door at the end of the vault hissed open.

Cold wind spilled through the metallic silence.

Beyond it—black corridors stretched into a new sector of the facility.

Alira's pulse glowed faintly through her wrist as she scanned the darkness.

> "This place… it's alive," she murmured. "Like it's watching."

Jax didn't answer.

His eyes hadn't left the fractured column where the older version of him had vanished.

A version he could still feel breathing under his skin.

> "How many versions of me did they make?"

> "How many are still out there?"

Alira touched his arm gently.

> "You're still you."

> "Am I?" he asked bitterly. "Or just the version that hasn't broken yet?"

She looked at him for a long time.

> "Pain doesn't mean you've lost yourself, Jax. It means you've survived everything meant to destroy you."

Their eyes locked.

But before the moment could deepen—

—the floor beneath them trembled.

The corridor flickered red.

> "Intrusion detected," echoed a cold female voice overhead.

"Releasing Subject 09."

Alira paled.

> "They're waking the others…"

Suddenly, something crashed from the ceiling above.

Jax grabbed her, pulling her behind him as claws scraped the metal floor.

Then—they saw it.

A boy.

No older than sixteen.

Shirtless. Pale. Eyes like flickering static.

Chains hung from his arms, etched with glowing script. His spine dripped with data-fluid.

He didn't speak. He just tilted his head.

And smiled.

> "Do you know me?" he whispered.

Jax stepped forward slowly. "Another clone?"

> "No…" the boy rasped.

"I'm what happens… when the Omega Seed finishes growing."

Lightning-fast, he lunged.

Jax barely blocked the hit. The force sent him skidding back.

> "He's faster than you," Alira said, backing toward the wall. "More evolved."

> "Then I have to end this before he remembers what he's capable of," Jax muttered.

But the boy was already behind him.

Whispers filled the air. Data-leak, memories, cries from other lives.

Alira cried out, clutching her head.

> "He's hijacking our minds!"

Jax dropped to one knee, breath ragged.

> "No… he's trying to rewrite us."

The boy floated now, hovering, eyes glowing blue.

> "They called me 'Echo.' I was the last. The final copy. But I became more than memory."

> "I became hunger."

Jax stood slowly, fists clenched.

> "Then let's see what happens when memory fights back."

His glyphs surged.

The light flared.

Two forces—one trying to forget, the other trying to remember—collided in the dark.
