Chapter 1 - The beginning

(Aisling's POV)

I sigh as Blaire watches me braid her hair from a small pocket mirror. "Hurry up Aisling," she complains. "Caroline will be here any second!"

"Don't be so tense." I reply. "You're lucky she's even letting you go out with friends." My other sister joins in —Kali.

"Where are the boy? If any of us are going to leave, we have to be here when she introduces us to our new sister."

Our mother has a passion for adopting…. troubled kids. None of us are her biological kids.

I finish braiding Blaire's hair and move on to my own. I'm 14 with long black hair and piercing grey eyes. In contrast, Kali is 15 with dirty blonde hair with brown eyes. Lastly, Blaire is 12 with deep brown hair with blonde streaks that had been bleached last summer. Her eyes are an emerald green with a slight hint of hazel.

It was clear that none of us were related biologically. I have deep tan while Kali has a complex that makes her look ghostly at times.

Blaire had always been the favorite since she was the youngest. Lacie —our adoptive mother— had raised her from an infant. Lacie and Blaire's mother were close friends until Blaire's mother had died from a heart condition.

I finish braiding my hair and look at Blaire. "Is it good?" My voice remains steady despite my obvious nervousness. It had been a while since Lacie had adopted another child. The last child she had adopted was well… me.

Kali seems to notice my tense posture because she puts a hand on my shoulder and smiles softly at me. "I'm sure whoever Lacie is bringing home will love you. Don't worry about it, you have us. Now come on, we need to find the boys."

I follow her out of the room and into the kitchen where the boys are crowded around the sink. In the middle, closest to the sink, Hunter and Lucas stand hovering over something in the sink. They don't notice us for a few minutes until Lucas practically jumps out of his skin when he sees us. "Wh-what are you doing here?" He stutters.

The other two boys go to stand on either side of Lucas and Hunter —Jake and Leo.

Lucas was an exact replica of Kali except for the obvious gender difference. He had the same dirty blonde hair and intimidating brown eyes. They were the only biological siblings in the entire house, twins to be exact. Leo was 15 with green eyes and black hair, while Jake was 16 and had black hair and blue eyes.

"What are you all planning?" I accuse.

"Nothing." Hunter steps forward, clearly lying through his teeth. Hunter was 13 with brown hair and brown eyes. I didn't notice he was hiding something behind his back until it was too late.

He tossed a frog at Kali and I. It landed on my hand until suddenly, it just fainted. The frog fell limp to the floor, dead almost. The four guys start to snicker and howl with laughter amongst themselves.

Kali scolded them but I was oblivious. The others had seemed completely fine, almost as if they hadn't saw what I had. It's just shock from the sudden scare, I say to myself in my head. Surely it couldn't be real, could it? No. I must be going crazy. No matter what I had told myself, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had just electrocuted that frog.
