Cherreads

Chapter 4 - Never again.

Doctors and nurses came and left but she still laid there. He had received so many phone calls but did not leave her side.

He didn't even notice when it got dark. There was a knock on the door.

"Come in". Jack said, yawning.

It was Ross. He stood at the door.

"Sir, I think you should go home and rest. I'll take you home. Crawler will look after her".

Well, he did need to get some rest for the next day, but he could not imagine leaving her all alone. He just could not.

"Instead, you should swing by my house. Get my tennis outfit and equipment, a suit with a white shirt, socks and shoes, my Rolex, and my shaving kit".

"What about underwear, Sir?" Ross asked.

"Yes, take care of that as well".

Ross nodded and left.

He turned his attention back to her. She had tried to end her life again. He remembered her saying that she didn't actually want to kill herself. But, it was probably the easiest way out.

If she really wanted to kill herself, why did she stay somewhere that people would find her and try to save her. First, at the overlook, then on the highway.

Was there a motive? Whatever her reasons were, he didn't care. All he cared about was that she was alive and safe.

He fell asleep on the chair beside her.

The next morning, a pretty nurse woke him up. She was carrying a clip board in her left arm. She had probably come to check Cassandra's vitals and do whatever routine was involved.

He stretched and stood up. He picked up his jacket from the arm of the chair and glanced at the clock. It was just past eight in the morning.

There was a bag for him at the corner. Ross had done very well. He picked up the bag and went out of the room.

Crawler was seated there with a newspaper in his hand.

"Good morning, Mr.Pole. I hope you slept well". Crawler said, rising from his seat.

"Good morning. I managed well, thanks for asking. Is Ross ready with the car?"

"Yes, Sir".

He nodded.

Crawler handed him a cup of coffee.

He nodded again in appreciation and left.

When he got to the car, Ross opened the door for him.

"Good morning, Mr. Pole". He said as Jack entered.

*Good morning. Has Katherine sent you the address of the tennis club?"

"Yes, Sir. She also said I should ask you to call her. She said she could not reach you".

He speed dialled Katherine and she answered on the first ring.

"Mr. Pole".

*What did you want to speak to me about, Katherine?" He asked.

"You did not send the contract to TTPS to review before the meeting on monday. Their secretary called, asking about it, but since I did not have a copy, I told her you would send them before noon today".

"Okay. Forward the email address to me". He said.

"Very well, Sir. Also, the Architecture department has rescheduled their meeting for 2 pm this afternoon".

"I'll be there. Is that all?"

"Yes, Sir. That would be all for now". She replied.

"Then I will see you at the office". He said and hung up.

Katherine was by far the best secretary he ever had. She was very efficient.

"We're here". Ross announced from the front.

They passed the security check point.

After he had changed into his club outfit and had been refreshed, the game began.

His opponent was Rick Myers, the owner of the club.

They were business partners. Rick was the type of guy that only discussed business after a good game of tennis. He respected those who were able to whoop his ass even more.

Jack just happened to fall into that category.

Jack made the first serve. The game carried on till past eleven.

They decided to discuss business over a couple of drinks.

After the meeting, Rick saw Jack off.

He had his clothes changed and headed off to work.

His mind was elsewhere. He kept imagining scenarios that the doctors would declare her dead or comatose.

After the meeting with the Architectural department, he stayed to review some documents.

He got a phone call. It was from Ross.

"Pole". He answered automatically.

"She's awake. Crawler just notified me".

"Thank you for the update. Get the car ready. I will be down in a few minutes". Jack said and started packing his things.

Ross was waiting at the entrance when he arrived. He entered the car and they moved.

When he got to the hospital, he went in to see her. She looked terrible. Her eyes were barely open. Her face looked blue.

He went to her side.

The nurse that was present whispered something and left them alone.

"What.. am I doing.. here?" She struggled to ask.

"Shh. It's okay. You're in safe hands."

She just turned her face away.

"Did you save me?" She asked.

He noticed that tears were streaming down her cheeks.

The last thing he wanted was to hurt her.

"As much as I would like to take credit for that, I didn't. People found you unconcious and called 911. I only heard about it after you were already admitted."

"I didn't want to be saved". She whispered.

He heard her.

"Then why did you choose to stay where everyone could see?" He asked.

"Because he was watching. I wanted him to know that I was doing it for him". She said quietly.

He was confused.

"Who? Your fiancee?" He asked.

She said nothing.

"Would you like something to eat?" He asked, taking a seat.

"Not really, unless its something you cooked". She responded, lightening up.

He was pleased by her change of mood.

"I am afraid you will have to manage food from the hospital's cafeteria". He said.

She smiled briefly and closed her eyes.

His phone beeped. He had a new message from an unknown number. He tapped on it.

It read;

"I am giving you thirty minutes to leave Cassandra's room or I'll blow this entire hospital up".

Jack's eyes widened.

Another message popped up. It was an image. He tapped on it. It was an image showing carefully placed explosives.

This was no joke.
