Chapter 34 - World 3: The Beastmen Village

The den was quiet and the fire was low.

Yin Yue was trying to read a scroll about herb preservation.

Keyword: trying.

Because Lang Zhu kept brushing their legs together under the furs.

Not accidentally, not subtly just lightly and deliberately.

Yin Yue finally snapped the scroll closed and said, "Do you have ants in your pants or are you just emotionally violent?"

Lang Zhu turned toward him. Serious now.

"Does it bother you?"

Yin Yue blinked. "What?"

"When I say you're mine."

The room shifted well not physically but emotionally. Yin Yue sat very still.

Lang Zhu's voice was soft. "If it makes you uncomfortable, I'll stop."

Yin Yue meant to say yes or at least maybe.

But what came out was:

"…No."

Lang Zhu waited.

Yin Yue muttered, "Say it again."

Lang Zhu leaned in and brushed his lips along Yin Yue's jaw.

And whispered, "You're mine."

Yin Yue let the scroll fall pulled Lang Zhu down by the front of his robe and kissed him hard.

When they pulled apart, breathless, Lang Zhu asked, "Still uncomfortable?"

Yin Yue whispered, "Shut up."

Lang Zhu smiled.

It started the next morning. After Lang Zhu's possessive declaration goes public, the village adopts it as a running joke.

Mi Mi passed Yin Yue in the herb garden, smiled sweetly, and said:

"Has his mate eaten today?"

Yin Yue blinked. "I'm not a pet."

Shan Da called across the square, "Has Lang Zhu's human had water?"

Yin Yue: "I'm not a chicken!"

Feng Xia threw in a dramatic bow. "All hail the Wolf's Beloved."

Yin Yue threw a sandal at him but missed badly.

Later, when Yin Yue cornered Lang Zhu behind the den, fists clenched, face red, he hissed, "They're making fun of me."

Lang Zhu nodded. "They're acknowledging the bond."

"They're mocking the bond."

"They're happy for us."

Yin Yue scowled. "Are you?"

Lang Zhu stepped close. Tucked his finger under Yin Yue's chin.

Whispered, "I've never been happier."

Yin Yue looked away.

Then said, "They keep calling me yours."

Lang Zhu: "Because you are."

Yin Yue groaned and Lang Zhu kissed his temple.

"Let them say it."

That night, someone anonymously left a pillow embroidered with the words: "Wolf's Favorite."

Yin Yue buried it under the blankets but didn't throw it away.

In the stillness of night, the fire had faded to coals and the den was silent.

Lang Zhu was still while Yin Yue lay in the curve of his arm, head against his shoulder, pretending to sleep.

Not out of deception. Just... safety.

It was easier to be quiet, to listen, to feel everything and say nothing.

Until Lang Zhu whispered:

"Mine."

One word in a low and soft voice. Not possessive, not sharp just tender. A promise folded inside a breath.

Yin Yue didn't move.

Didn't let on. But inside? He came undone. Because that one word didn't make him feel trapped. It made him feel safe.

He whispered back, so quiet it wasn't even words:

Yes.

And Lang Zhu pulled him closer in his sleep.

Life after ceremony. No grand events. No more declarations. Just a day with Lang Zhu gathering herbs, teasing Feng Xia, cooking stew.

It started like any other day. Lang Zhu handed him tea.

Yin Yue sipped it with a half-smile and muttered, "Too hot."

Lang Zhu didn't reply.

Just gently turned the cup in his hands, cooling it with a touch of water from the spring.

Yin Yue tried not to smile but failed.

They walked the garden paths, gathering root herbs for Mi Mi.

Lang Zhu carried the basket. Yin Yue picked the softest ones and complained about dirt.

Lang Zhu wiped his fingers clean each time without comment, without prompting.

Yin Yue bumped his shoulder into him once, playfully. Lang Zhu caught his elbow like it was instinct.

It probably was.

Later, they passed Feng Xia sunbathing in a hammock, wearing nothing but a smirk and one decorative leaf.

Yin Yue shieldeed his eyes. "You're a menace."

Feng Xia waved. "You're a housewife."

Lang Zhu said, "He's my housewife."

Yin Yue made a choking noise while Feng Xia burst into laughter.

Lang Zhu kissed his temple and walked on.

That evening, they made stew. Lang Zhu stirred.

Yin Yue leaned against him, arms crossed, grumbling about seasoning.

They argued quietly then laughed.

And when the stew was done, they ate side by side, knees brushing, like they'd done it a hundred times.

Because they had.

Because this was normal now.

Later, curled in their shared blanket, watching the fire fade, Yin Yue said, very softly:

"I could do this forever."

Lang Zhu looked at him.

"You already are."

Yin Yue returns to the river the place where Lang Zhu first pulled him out of the current.

The river hadn't changed. Still cold, still clear and still winding through the forest like it had secrets to tell.

Yin Yue crouched on the same boulder where he'd first woken up few weeks ago, dripping, confused, and furious.

He could still picture it. Lang Zhu's silhouette against the sky.

Those eyes watching, waiting, not saying much.

He smiled now. Soft. Slow. Real.

The wind stirred the trees gently. Birds called across the water.

He dipped his fingers in and said, "It started here."

Behind him, footsteps. Familiar and steady.

Lang Zhu crouched beside him. Didn't speak just waited.

Yin Yue whispered, "I thought this was temporary."

Lang Zhu said, "I didn't."

Yin Yue looked at him. Then down at their hands. His fingers slid into Lang Zhu's and tightened.

"I'm staying," he said.

Lang Zhu kissed the back of his hand.

"I know."

Back to their den, Yin Yue sat on the den floor, folding robes.

Lang Zhu sorted herbs beside him. They didn't speak and didn't have to.

Yin Yue reached for a sash. Lang Zhu passed it to him without looking.

Their fingers brushed. Yin Yue looked up while Lang Zhu was still watching the herbs.

Still calm and still there.

Yin Yue leaned in. No ceremony, no warning just a kiss softly and slow.

Right on Lang Zhu's cheekbone. Lang Zhu froze then smiled widely and Quietly. Yin Yue said nothing.

Lang Zhu said, "What was that for?"

Yin Yue shrugged. "Because I wanted to."

Lang Zhu kissed his forehead.

"Then do it again."

So he did.

They lie side by side beneath the stars. Yin Yue watches the sky, thinking of all the places he's been worlds, maybe lives, maybe futures.

They lay on the hill above the village. The sky was velvet-black, dotted with stars like scattered seeds.

Lang Zhu's arm was under Yin Yue's neck. His tail, loose in the grass, brushed lightly against Yin Yue's ankle every so often.

Neither of them spoke. Not for a long time. And then..

"I used to think I didn't belong anywhere," Yin Yue said quietly.

Lang Zhu didn't interrupt.

"I thought maybe I was just passing through. Temporary."

Lang Zhu waited. Yin Yue looked up at the stars.

"I've seen a lot of skies," he said. "But none that felt like mine."

Then he turned and looked at Lang Zhu.

And said:

"I don't want another world."

"I want this one."

"I want you."

The final morning. No fanfare, the sun rose slow and the fire crackled low.

Yin Yue sat wrapped in their shared blanket, watching Lang Zhu pour tea like he always did steady, focused, and gentle.

The den smelled like herbs and warmth while outside, the village stirred softly, full of life, normal and beautiful.

Lang Zhu handed him the cup. Yin Yue took it, fingers brushing his and their eyes met.

No words and none needed.
