The memory always came but this time it was sharp, merciless and uninvited.
Lia sat motionless as rage simmered beneath her skin. She had lived this moment a thousand times. And she had to admit it never lost its sting. It was as painful as it has ever been.
A knock broke the silence. Damien stepped in, his was expression guarded, he didnt waste time for pleasantries and handed Lia a slim black folder in hand.
"Boss." His voice was low. "I found something."
Lia didn't look at him, she just clenched the armrest tighter. Even although she was locked in that cursed asylum, Lia had stayed connected, Lia still pulled the strings in the dark. Now, they were finally delivering.
Lia released her grip and opened the folder. Damien began to tell Lia his findings "Per you orders I went digging for any relationship between Lady Laurel and the Dark Council," he began. "But I found none all I found out that at sixteen, she vanished leaving no trail, no trace. Your grandparents searched for seven years, across continents. But still found nothing."
Lia's face stayed unreadable as she listened to Damien."They gave up," he continued. "They declared her dead after a futile attempt. But they were wrong. Ten years later, in April 3rd she surfaced. It was for a short while, but it was enough for her to be spotted, she was found in a hotel in Aradelle. And she was pregnant."
"She was seven months along," he added.
Immediately Lia's jaw tensed. April to June and she was born in June so was her twin so therefore she guessed at once the identity of the fetus. This realization made Lia finally looked up. Now what was on her mind was how the heck her mother got pregnant and was responsible and why she disappeared"Go on."
"Your grandfather tried to bring her back. But he was too late. She disappeared again but before that she was spotted with Dr. Marie."
Hearing that Lia's eyes darkened."And the second disappearance?" she asked. "202X. I was ten."
Damien handed her a second folder he was quite prepared it was thicker and looked quite old.
"It took a while for me to even gather this info and I thought that it would be helpful but in the end it was totally useless because no one's seen her since. But before she vanished… again, she met with Dr. Marie once ."
Lia stared at the final photo a grainy image clipped to the file. Something clicked. An idea bloomed. What if she wasn't dead?
What if her mother had been running all along?
She stood slowly and walked toward the massive glass window. The skyline outside glimmered, oblivious. Her fingers tapped the folder's edge—slow, rhythmic.
Silence stretched.
Damien waited. Then finally spoke after a long pause "There's more," Damien said carefully. "Dr. Marie was last seen in Volgrin. Three years ago. In border town, she changed her name and moved in shadows… then vanished."
Lia didn't turn. "Then Volgrin is where I start."
"I've arranged a jet it will set off in two hours. I have also prepared a safe house there at a very quiet location " he spoke then waited for Lia's reply but there was still, silence.
Damien shifted. "Are you sure about this?"
Finally she turned but slowly. Her eyes were steel.
"I was drugged, caged lied to and forgotten. Now I know my mother didn't vanish. She was erased. Dr. Marie might be the scalpel or a piece of the to a very big and dangerous puzzle I must solve"
"She watched it all," Lia said. "And said nothing."
Damien lowered his gaze . "I'll send the coordinates to your burner." He said then stepped out, the door clicking shut behind him. He knew that nothing he said could change her mind so decided to not involved.
Immediately she heard the door click, Lia didn't waste a second. She moved to her drawer, pulled out a sleek black phone, and dialed a number.
It rang once. Then:
"Yes?" came a distorted voice.
"She's in Volgrin," Lia said coldly. "Lock her down. I want you to find and do it quietly. I want her paranoid. And if she runs...use any means possible even breaking her legs of needed all I want is that she stays alive."
" You can count on me " the voice said and the call ended. She placed the phone back.
She never shifted her gaze from there skyline and whispered under her breath to skyline"She she knows something and I'm gonna find out what ."
Her eyes burned.
"Now I'm coming to take it all back and make them pay."
