Chapter 24 - The pulse users

Tabaki blinked, eyes flicking to the side of her cloak that still shadowed her face.

"How many tiles did you count?"

She turned slightly in his direction, her cloak still obscuring just enough.

"Thirty-five across the center. That makes it about 42 meters wide flat side to flat side."

She let that hang, then added,

"Same across the other direction, more or less. Regular hex layout. So yeah about 42 by 42 meters of open field."

...…..

Tabaki muttered under his breath,

"...I think I'm in love."

Iwaizumi chuckled, nudging him.

"What happened to Lady Justice?"

Tabaki blinked, then waved him off.

"Lady who? Shush, Iwa. Don't ruin this moment for me."

Kenta blinked, genuinely impressed by her.

"That's exactly correct. For a fighter, knowing the distance, width, length and understanding how much space you have to work with is essential to winning. Most pros forget that entirely."

Kenta leaned back slightly, watching the replay one more time.

"She's a Control-type. Or what most call an Emission Pulse type user. Her ability focuses on releasing energy or in her case, a substance outward, away from the body."

Gin blinked.

"Emission? So there are types of Pulse users?"

He turned to Iwaizumi and Tabaki.

"Wait how come you two didn't know about this? This kind of info sounds... really useful."

Both of them gave a helpless shrug.

Iwaizumi replied first,

"Well, in dungeon raids, you usually know more about the dungeon than the fighters. No one ever explains abilities. There's no analysis team or expert breakdown. You just follow whatever fandom or guide fits your team."

Tabaki chimed in, "Yeah, I'm not even into any of that. Just... Lady Justice."

He paused, suddenly remembering the cloaked girl nearby.

But he definitely didn't want her knowing that.

Gin still looked puzzled.

Kenta stepped in, calm as ever.

"The MPA's actually a great place to learn about Pulse types. But unless you've been in certain fields or certain situations most people never hear about the classifications."

Kenta sighed not out of annoyance, but like a teacher switching into lecture mode.

"Okay. Think of it this way. Every fighter in the ring awakens a Pulse, an energy shaped by their biology and experience. Some turn that energy inward to enhance their body. Others, like her, project it outward."

He pointed at the girl on the screen, mid-blast.

"She uses her Pulse to generate and release that boiling liquid. But it's not random. She controls how far it goes, how hot it is, how it spreads. That's the Control side of it. The precision."

Gin scratched his head.

"So it's not just spitting at random?"

Kenta shook his head.

"No. It's more like weaponized environmental control. She's not just attacking she's shaping and commanding the liquid. That's the core of Emission and Control types."

Iwaizumi let out a low whistle.

"Damn. So if she wasn't able to control the liquid she would only be classified as an emission Pulse user .

Kenta nodded.

"Exactly. Pulse types like hers rely on fine-tuned control. And unless a user can master that level of precision, they won't even be classified as Control-type."

Kenta paused the replay.

"Now, look at Fighter B the one who lost."

The screen froze on her mid-air, struggling, just before she was blasted out of the ring.

"She's also an Emission-type user. But notice I didn't say Control. That's important."

He pointed at her posture.

"Her Pulse is tuned outward , not inward. That means she has no real control over what the Pulse does just that it happens. From the looks of it, the ability lifts her to a fixed height and holds her there. Same elevation every time, no directional input, no fine-tuning."

He pointed at the screen.

"It's not a flight. It's more like limb-based levitation. Her ability repels her away from the ground under her feet or alters gravitational pull slightly enough to suspend her for short periods. Around two minutes, give or take."

He glanced back at the group.

"She can activate it, sure but she can't steer, adjust height, or control duration. That lack of precision is why she's strictly classified as an Emission-type."

Gin raised a brow.

"So... she can only activate the Pulse? That's it? No control beyond that?"

Kenta nodded.

"Right. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. It depends on how you apply it. Brute strength alone won't win fights you need creativity."

He glanced at the others.

"This kind of limitation is common among Emission-type users. The ability activates, but they can't fine-tune it. Still, it's about how you use what you've got."

He let that sink in before continuing.

"It's hard to explain, but Pulse is really about pushing the body past its natural limits. Better balance, sharper vision, faster reflexes, elastic joints, reinforced bones these are common examples, especially for Enhancement-type users."

He folded his arms.

"In the end, it all depends on how the Pulse settles in your body. That determines everything."

The cloaked girl leaned forward, her voice low but curious.

"But I still see that as a limitation, Grandpa. She could float, sure but without control, wasn't she bound to lose?"

Kenta tapped the screen, pausing the footage.

"Maybe… maybe not. I've seen fighters with far worse limitations win with ease."

He gestured at the frozen image of the airborne fighter.

"She had the tools but not the mindset. Instead of treating her Pulse like a platform, she used it to rest. Big mistake."

He leaned back slightly, arms crossed.

"If she had used that elevation to launch projectiles, shift altitude, or even activate her Pulse mid-air toward Fighter A, she might've pushed the boiling liquid and Fighter A back. Think about it: that could've acted like a pulse blast, a short-range repulsion field."

He tapped his temple.

"She could've used it like a magnetic shield redirecting force instead of just floating there. Maybe even knocked Fighter A out of the hex."

Kenta's voice turned firm.

"Pulse isn't just about power. It's about momentum, awareness, and creativity. The moment you stop thinking you're exposed."

The cloaked girl tilted her head slightly.

"But what about the time limit? Two minutes isn't much."

Kenta smiled, clearly impressed.

"Two minutes is more than enough if you know how to use it. No Pulse comes without limitations. It's all about working around them."

He tapped the armrest, thoughtful.

"Two minutes of continuous lift? That's a powerful tool. She could've used it to reposition, pressure her opponent, or even end the fight early."

He glanced around the group.

"Take Enhancement-type Pulse users, for example. They have a burst window a short timeframe where their body operates beyond its limits. After that, either the Pulse shuts down… or the body starts to break."
