My heart thumped loudly in my chest as Damon walked towards me slowly.
"Damon," I called.
"Did you really go see Dror?" he asked.
I bit my lip. If Tara was that pissed at me, I wondered just how bad it would be with Damon. I didn't want to lie, I was getting tired of all the lies. They were really eating me up inside. I didn't know what to do.
I nodded silently, afraid to meet his eyes. He looked floored.
"Why?" he asked.
"Because I thought that was the only way to protect you," I said.
"H-how…" he paused and exhaled through his nose. "How did you think that was going to protect me?"
"Damon," I called.
"Do you have any idea what it would mean if Dror took over the West?" he asked.
"I don't care," I said.
He stepped back, shocked. "What?"
"Honestly, I don't give a shit if the world burns," I paused, meeting his gaze.
"As long as you're safe. That's all that matters."
The silence hung over us for a few seconds. I couldn't tell what he was thinking.
