"I guess Grindelwald has infiltrated MACUSA by now!"

Carl walked through the crowd and lined up in front of the fireplace, thinking back on the report he'd just glanced at in the newspaper.

If he remembered correctly, after being wanted internationally, Grindelwald disguised himself as an Auror named Percival Graves, who was also the Director of Magical Security and Director of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement of the Magical Congress of the United States of America.

But this wasn't what he needed to focus on at the moment. His main priority was to quickly absorb all the magic in Tom Foley's memory and become a proficient wizard first.

During the first six months after his arrival, his main goal was to master all the fundamental magical skills a wizard should possess.

There were two rows of fireplaces directly across the main hall — the left side for entering and the right side for departing. Carl stood in front of the first fireplace on the right.

The wizards in line in front of him vanished into the green flames one by one, and soon it was his turn.

Taking a deep breath, Tom grabbed a handful of shimmering powder from the pot by the side of the fireplace and tossed it into the flames. As the fire turned green, he stepped into the fireplace and called:

"Diagon Alley!"

The green flames immediately rose up and enveloped him. The next moment, he appeared in the fireplace of the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley.

"Hey, Mr. Foley, how about a glass of sherry? All drinks and food at the bar are free today!"

As soon as he walked out of the fireplace, Carl was stopped by a young man in his twenties who was standing at the bar.

Turning his head and glancing at the cheering wizards in the bar, Carl smiled and shook his head:

"No, Tom. I just came back from my trip and now I just want to go home and get some rest. What's going on today? Everyone seems so happy."

The young man, Tom, was the current owner of the Leaky Cauldron in Diagon Alley. He had studied at Hufflepuff at Hogwarts and was a few years younger than Carl. After graduation, Tom inherited the bar from his father.

Usually, the bar wasn't this lively, with food and drinks being handed out for free. That kind of celebration only happened on special occasions — and Tom's first day as the landlord was one of them.

Tom nodded and explained:

"Mr. Foley, I have some good news. The Leaky Cauldron isn't going to be demolished after all. The Ministry of Magic has decided to use a large number of Obliviation Charms on Muggle designers and officials to make sure the Leaky Cauldron stays where it is in the new city plans."

"That is indeed something to celebrate!"

Carl immediately understood.

According to his memory, the Muggle government had originally planned to construct Charing Cross Road two months previously. That meant the Leaky Cauldron would certainly be demolished.

As the only pub in Diagon Alley, it was a refuge for wizards in the Muggle world — a place to eat, drink, chat, or stay overnight — and losing it would have been a heavy blow to many in the community.

This was especially tough for Tom, who had just taken over the bar.

Fortunately, more than two weeks previously, when the original Tom was about to travel, many wizards protested against this, and collectively petitioned the Ministry of Magic to find a solution.

It seemed their pleas were heard, and the Ministry chose to use an extensive Obliviation Charm to avoid demolishing the Leaky Cauldron, thereby preserving it for future generations.

After saying goodbye to Tom, Carl walked into the backyard of the bar and entered Diagon Alley through its hidden entrance.

He hadn't mastered Apparition yet, so this was the only way for him to get into Diagon Alley safely.

Fortunately, the wizards were busy drinking and cheering in the lounge, and nobody came into the backyard — otherwise it might have been a bit embarrassing.

"Copper, brass, pewter, silver cauldrons — all models, automatic stirring, foldable, retractable — come in and take a look!"

"Gray owls, horned owls, bob-tail cats, long-haired cats, black-rimmed toads, golden toads, corn snakes, king snakes, red rose spiders — we have all the pets you want!"

"The fastest flying broom — the Sweep One Star from the Sweep Broom Company — a groundbreaking invention. You deserve it!"

"Dragon liver, bat spleen, eel eyes, spell books, quills, parchment, potion bottles, moonscopes — all at a reasonable price!"

Walking down the cobblestone path of Diagon Alley, past a row of magical stores, Carl soon came to his own herbal shop — Mr. Foley's Herbal Medicine.

Because the school season was over, there weren't many wizards in Diagon Alley — mainly adults, not children — wandering about.

He took the key from his small cloth bag and opened the door of the herbal shop. Before he entered, a small figure in tattered clothes suddenly appeared in front of him.

"Master, you're back!"

"It's Barry. Have there been any problems in the store recently?"

Carl looked at the little creature in front of him and recognized her immediately. She was Barry, the Foley family's house-elf.

House-elves were a magical race enslaved by wizards in ages past. Each was raised to serve their masters and bound by powerful magic to obey their orders — and if they disobeyed, they were forced to punish themselves.

Usually, only pure-blood families kept house-elves. Although the Foley family fell from power, it remained one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight pure-blood houses — which meant it kept a loyal elf.

"Dear Master, under Barry's supervision, everything in the store is normal. Barry cleaned it twelve times a day to make sure you'd find it spotless upon your return."

Barry nodded quickly, afraid her master might be displeased with her.

Carl smiled:

"Excellent. Go and prepare some lunch. I'm hungry."

House-elves were wonderful creatures. Naturally proficient in silent magic without wands, and skilled in all kinds of daily tasks, they made perfect servants.

"Yes, Master! Please wait a moment; lunch will be ready soon!"

With a deep bow, Barry vanished on the spot.

Carl walked into the herbal shop, turned on the magical lamps, paused for a moment, and then closed the door again.

The Foley family's assets were enough for him to live on without trouble. There was no need to waste his valuable time running the herbal shop. His priority now was to learn and master magic.

The herbal store itself wasn't very large, and the herbs displayed on the counter weren't particularly abundant. It certainly wouldn't bring in much income.

Walking through the main hall into the living quarters at the back, Carl saw Barry once more.

At this moment, Barry was busy in the kitchen, using her magic to control utensils and ingredients. The pots, knives, and spoons seemed to move on their own under her command.

Not long after, a range of delicious dishes flew gracefully from the stove and landed on the dining table.
