Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: Shadows of the Past

The days leading up to the engagement passed in a blur of preparations, formal dinners, and endless family meetings. Abhi played his part, nodding at the right moments, smiling when expected-but inside, he was still adjusting to this new reality.

Ishika, on the other hand, seemed perfectly at ease. She handled every detail with precision, never once letting the pressure show. "If I have to listen to one more discussion about flower arrangements, I might just lose my mind," she muttered under her breath as she and Abhi stood side by side at yet another event.

Abhi smirked. "Welcome to the world of high-society weddings."

She rolled her eyes. "Honestly, I'd rather just sign the papers and get it over with."

He chuckled. "Now that's an idea."

Their easy banter was interrupted by a sudden hush in the room. Abhi turned his head, his expression hardening as he spotted Ruhi standing at the entrance. Dressed simply, her eyes locked onto his, full of unspoken words.

Ishika noticed the shift in his demeanor. "You want me to handle this?" she asked softly.

Abhi shook his head. "No. I'll take care of it."

He walked toward Ruhi, his face unreadable. "What are you doing here?"

Ruhi swallowed hard, her voice trembling. "I just... I needed to see you."

Abhi exhaled sharply. "There's nothing left to say, Ruhi."

She took a step closer. "Abhi, please. Just one chance to explain."

He studied her for a long moment before shaking his head. "Not here. Meet me outside."

As he walked away, Ishika watched with quiet curiosity. She had no doubt Abhi could handle himself-but something about Ruhi's desperation sent a chill down her spine.

Outside, the night air was cool against Abhi's skin as he waited for Ruhi to speak. She hesitated before whispering, "Do you really love her?"

His answer was immediate. "It's not about love, Ruhi. It's about trust. And I can't trust you."

Tears welled up in her eyes, but she forced a smile. "Then I guess this is goodbye."

Abhi nodded. "Goodbye, Ruhi."

As she walked away, he felt no sadness, no regret-only a sense of finality. Inside, Ishika waited, and for the first time, he felt like he wasn't just following a path set for him. He was choosing it.
