Well… so what if he kept teasing her?
She didn't really mind.
Pretending not to notice might even help her get a little closer to him.
"Veil," Alice said softly, "why are some parents so selfish? I mean, they gave birth to their children, but then they turn around and try to hurt them like it's nothing."
Her voice tightened with quiet anger, clearly affected by something she'd seen firsthand.
"This last trip out with the matron… I saw something that made me sick. If she hadn't caught it in time, that poor kid could've been killed. By his own parents."
The story wasn't complicated. Alice explained it to Veil, her voice trembling with disbelief.
"Years ago, there was this young couple. They had a baby boy, but when they found out he had a few health issues, they abandoned him. The matron took him in and raised him."
Alice clenched her fists as she continued.
