Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen

Paris

My feet automatically carried me toward the beach, like they were moving themselves. Everyone was drawn by the excitement of a remarkable gift meant for the king's eyes, but me. As I approached, the sight that awaited me took my breath away. It was a stunning wooden horse, a magnificent symbol crafted by the gods; it had to be. Right, it was? Somehow, I didn't think so.

"A wooden horse! What a stunning gift from the gods!" I heard Hector exclaim, his voice filled with joy. All of us marveled at the beauty of this remarkable offering.

"I think we should burn it." Something about this random gift doesn't sit right with me. The gods don't just leave gifts for no reason; it doesn't make sense. I love the gods, but this isn't right.

"Burn it, brother. It's a gift."

"For what?"

"For never losing our values during this war."

I look down at the sand, feeling helpless. Hector is determined to bring this horse into the kingdom, no matter what. There was nothing I could say.

Moments later, the wooden horse was placed in front of the temple. My heart was completely shattered at the thought that this could harm the city I love. I must show Helen the secret exit. I need to get her out of the city immediately. It would be one less thing on my mind.

I race into the room where she sits in front of her vanity, doing her makeup. She looks so beautiful even without it. She looks up at me with those gorgeous eyes, and I feel my heart breaking.

"You need to listen to me."

"Okay, Paris." Her face instantly drops. Her lips were in a frown.

"I am getting you out of the city now."

"What now?"

I nod. "The horse, I have a bad feeling, and I am taking no chances."

Just moments later, I find myself standing before a secret entrance known only to royalty. Dad, Hector, and I were the only ones who knew about it. It was very secret.

I gaze into her eyes, which are filled with fear, yet deep down, I know I'm making the right decision. In a way, it is as if the gods themselves are guiding me, showing me the hidden paths of destiny.

"Paris, I'm scared," she whispers, her voice trembling.

I gently brush my thumb against her cheek, trying to show her my love. I am glad she trusted me enough to do this and leave. It makes me proud.

"You must go through the tunnels," I say, handing her the fire-powered lantern. "Once you emerge from the darkness, you'll find yourself surrounded by trees. There are many caves hidden within the forest. Pick one to hide in. I promise I'll come find you."

She gives a slight nod. On her face, I can see that she was scared. "Are you sure this is the best choice?"

I meet her gaze and nod confidently. Then, with a broken heart, I moved in and kissed her one last time. I feel the weight of my entire world in that brief moment; this very well could be the last night I kiss her. I feel so much pain in that thought. As she pulls away and vanishes into the darkness, I take a deep breath, forcing myself to trust in this suspicion I have.
