Chapter 36 - Chapter XVI: Frustrations Beneath (Pt. 2)

BACK ON EARTH...

Damien stood in his thoughts. He was still impressed by how different Alissia was compared to when they first met. She even possessed the power to protect others without being near them. He remembered the day they defeated Avarice. They were helping the unfortunate city that Verin had demolished when he witnessed Alissia save a kid from some falling debris. She had been nowhere in sight, yet the chunks of stone had stopped above the kid's head before softly landing on the ground.

When he'd asked her about it, she said she used her All-Sight in conjunction with Lift. He didn't think she realized it yet, but that would mean she could potentially control anything from anywhere–especially if she got even stronger...

Damien looked around. They were on a rocky plain in Greece outside a stone cave Arne called home. Thankfully, they weren't planning to stay long. Just rest for a bit due to spending the day helping cities affected by Rabae's arrival.

He spotted Arne rolling their shoulders from all of the heavy lifting they'd done. Initially, he was worried about Arne because they had been silent since their defeat against Rabae, but surprisingly, Arne had taken the loss well. Their pride in being indestructible was hit, but it served as a new goal of strength. Arne vowed to make it their own someday.

When Arne made that claim, Viraa told Arne that it was a common dream among klevonians, but she had faith that Arne would achieve it.

Damien watched Trevor and Wren as they sat together on a rock a few hundred feet off, separating themselves from him, Naomi, and Arne. Of course, there was no trust between them. There was tension all day between him and them, but they knew better than to run or cause trouble.

Damien knew why they hated him specifically, though. They wanted him to suffer for Junichiro's death.

"Hey," Damien said as Naomi sighed of boredom while lying on a rock and looking up at the moon. Since the others left, she'd been constantly in the dumps about Za'Fia leaving. Damien was sure she'd eventually start reaching out to Za'Fia telepathically, though. How the two of them became friends was always beyond him.

"Hm?" she responded, her arms folded and supporting behind her head.

"What are those two discussing?" he asked her, looking at the siblings.

"Hmm...They're plotting to kill you," Naomi replied after listening. "Wren wants to take a stealthy approach. That way, they can quickly escape afterward. Trevor thinks he could simply blow us all to pieces while we're recuperating....Now he's agreed to catch you off guard and hit you at point-blank. Oh, here he comes."

Trevor abruptly sped straight for Damien, but Damien's Submission cintracy caused Trevor's body to weaken, trip, and crash a few feet before his feet as he approached.

Veins began to bulge from Trevor's forehead as he showed incredible determination to attack Damien. Slowly, he struggled to stand.

Damien was shocked and impressed by the willpower that allowed him to resist Submission to such a degree.

As Trevor continued his struggling display, he began to bleed from the nose as he took a step toward Damien.

Damien raised a hand and used his power over metal to control the blood within Trevor, forcing him to stop.

"You know you can't attack me. Continuing will put your life at risk," Damien stated nonchalantly as Trevor struggled in pain as he tried to fight Damien's grip. "Even if you could attack, you couldn't beat your brother, yet you think you can beat me?"

"You're a coward!" Trevor spat angrily. "I bet you used this power to subdue J and then killed him. He'd never lose to someone like you. This power doesn't make you stronger than him."

 Damien grimaced at the comment.

"I didn't use Submission nor my power over your blood when I fought Junichiro," Damien told him matter-of-factly.

"He died using his full strength and then some to fight for Avarice's ideals, not weakened or restrained by this disgraceful ability," Damien said before sending Trevor flying backward, where he crashed into the ground and left a trench of broken stone in his wake.

When Trevor got up, he gritted his teeth, his anger rising higher. Damien noticed the wind start to pick up as Wren floated toward them.

"Finally, something other than cleanup," Arne cracked their knuckles as they stepped next to Damien.

Then, before Trevor charged again, they each sensed another powerful presence enter Earth's atmosphere. This shocked Damien because the planet showed no signs of another pneumarian being nearby.

Before he could even give an order, a female pneumarian suddenly appeared from a streak of light, stopping lightly on her toes before coming to a full standing position.

"Whew," she exhaled as she looked at the rest of them. "Hello."

--------------------------------------------------------

Fun fact: Submission - a cintracy that passively releases a pheromone made from the user's spirit energy that makes most people have the urge to do anything to make them happy. Higher life forms do not have this urge but those affected do find it impossible to harm the user. Only those who have no romantic or sexual interests aren't affected by this power.

Those under the effects who forcibly try to harm the user suffer internal damage and bleeding that could ultimately kill them.
