Chapter 116 - Curly

"But I remember thinking you were the most beautiful girl I had ever seen after my mother."

Nejire's mouth opened slightly. "What..."

"Like, objectively," I continued. "Not even on some weird shit. Just, factually speaking, you stood out. You had the whole thing... energy, presence, all that." I waved a hand. "But if some random extra won, then clearly, they wanted something else."

Nejire studied my face like she was trying to decide whether or not I was messing with her. "So you actually remember last year's contest?"

I shrugged. "Barely. Izuku wouldn't shut up about it, and you were impossible to ignore. So, yeah, I remember."

Her lips twitched. "You don't even like these kinds of events, but you think I should've won?"

"Obviously. You are annoying, but you are not boring. That is half the battle."

She huffed but didn't argue. "So what do I do this year?"

I tapped my fingers against the pillow still covering my lap. "You need a moment. Something that sticks in people's heads. Last year, you just relied on your personality, right?"

She nodded.

"Which works, but people are dumb as hell. They need something clear. A reason to pick you."

She tilted her head. "Like what?"

"Something flashy. Something that shuts down every other contestant the second you walk on stage."

Nejire hummed. "That is vague, but I like where you are going."

"You are already the strongest personality in the room," I said. "Now you just need to make sure no one can even compete."

Her eyes sparked. "Ooooh, like, total domination?"

"Yeah."

She grinned. "I like it."

I sat up a little. "You need an opening move. Something big."

Nejire nodded, bouncing slightly. "And a closer! I need to end it on something insane."

I nodded. "What do you have so far?"

Nejire tapped her chin. "Floating and drawing a rose with my Quirk."

I leaned back. "That is actually not half bad, but we can work on it."

She kicked her legs, thinking. "I mean, I thought about maybe adding some sparkles? But that is kinda basic. Everybody expects sparkles."

"You need something that will make the entire audience shut the hell up."

Her eyes lit up. "Ooooh. Like, a 'holy shit' moment?"

"Exactly." I grabbed my phone. "You got a theme?"

"Uh… like, a vibe?"

"Yeah. Last year was just 'Nejire being Nejire,' but if you want to lock this in, you need an actual image. Something that sticks."

She flopped onto her stomach, arms stretched out damn near close. "Ughhh. But I don't wanna be boring."

I pressed the pillow to my growing excitement. "Firstly, remember I am naked, and I am not some random Japanese beta protagonist. Do not tempt me."

Nejire scrambled back so fast she damn near phased through the wall. "WHAT THE FUCK?!"

I stretched, not even bothering to adjust the pillow. "Do you have hairs?"

Her brain short-circuited. "Huh?"

"Hair. Nails. U.A. collects them for suits." I ran a hand through my own. "Mirio and Toru already got theirs. Mirio's so his clothes do not slip off when he phases, and Toru's… well, so I do not have to see her naked all the time."

Nejire's eye twitched. "Why are you bringing this up NOW?!"

"Because if you want my help, I am making you a suit." I flicked the edge of the pillow. "Now, you gonna keep standing there looking at my dick through a pillow, or are we moving on?"

She grabbed the nearest object, my water bottle, and threw it at my head. I caught it, opened it, and took a sip. "You are terrible at throwing."

Nejire groaned, dragging her hands down her face. "This is NOT how I imagined this conversation going."

"Welcome to my life." I leaned back. "So? Hair. Yes or no?"

She nodded. "Yeah, all mine are still in stasis."

Made sense. U.A. wasn't about to let perfectly good Quirk material rot in a closet somewhere. They had stasis storage for stuff like that… hair, nails, whatever was needed for custom hero suits.

"Go get some," I said. "It is late, but whatever."

She hesitated. "Wait, can you even make suits?"

I pointed at myself. "Of course."

Shouldn't have.

The pillow slid off.

Nejire's eyes dropped. Froze.

We both just stared.

Silence.

Then…

"Oh, what the fuck," she blurted out, throwing herself back like I had just pulled a grenade pin with my teeth.

I grabbed the pillow, slapped it back into place. "Fucking hell, Nejire…"

"ME? You are the one out here flashing people like it is a goddamn peep show!"

"You broke into my room!"

She scrambled upright, waving a hand in front of her face like that would somehow erase what just happened. "Why are you like this?! What did I do to deserve this?!"

I sighed. "You are acting like you didn't literally crawl into my room in the middle of the night. What did you think was gonna happen?"

She groaned, grabbing at her hair. "I don't know! Not THAT!"

I stretched, adjusting the pillow slightly… then smirked. "So?"

She blinked. "What?"

I shrugged. "What is the verdict?"

She blinked again, slower this time, like her brain was still buffering. Then her face twisted. "Are you serious?"

I grinned. "C'mon, be honest. I won't judge."

She lunged, grabbed another pillow, and chucked it at my head. I caught it one-handed.

"Asshole," she muttered, rubbing her temples. "I cannot believe this."

I snorted. "Believe it."

She groaned again, shaking her head, then pointed at me. "Get dressed before I come back."

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, yeah."

She stomped out, muttering to herself. I waited until I heard her footsteps fade before I got up and threw on some sweatpants.

By the time she came back, I was at my desk, flipping through system blueprints. She dropped a small container on the table, arms crossed. "There. That should be enough."

I grabbed it, checking the contents. "Good. This will work."

She leaned in, eyes narrowing. "You are serious about this?"

I tapped my phone where I had some sketches. "I don't half-ass things."

She watched for a second, then flopped onto my bed again, kicking her feet. "Okay, so what are you making?"

I flipped through designs in my mind. "As I said, three times now, something that stands out. Something wows, something that will make you feel bonita."

She hummed. "And how do we do that?"

"Custom material," I said. "Something that reacts to your Quirk. Dynamic. Not just some pretty dress."

"Ooooh, like a battle dress?"

"Not exactly," I said, zooming in on a few details. "Think of it like… movement enhancement. Something that flows with you, makes it impossible for people to look away."

She wiggled her toes. "I like that."

I glanced at her. "You didn't answer. What is the theme?"

She tapped her chin. "I was thinking something elegant, but with an edge. Something that is not just 'pretty' but actually impressive."

I nodded. "Name it something cool. No more 'Nejire being Nejire.' Call it…"

I paused.

"...'Event Horizon.'"

She blinked. "Wait, that is actually kind of badass."

"Yeah. Now live up to it." I smirked. "So, the usual."

She grinned. "Obviously."

I started sketching. The main structure would be flexible, something that enhanced her natural flow. The real trick was integrating Quirk-responsive elements. Maybe something that shimmered with movement, like refracting light trails, making every spin and motion leave an afterimage effect.

I got up, grabbing her wrist. "Let's go."

Nejire blinked. "Wait, wha…?"

I yanked her toward the window, jumping out before she could ask anything else. She barely managed to keep up, floating just enough to avoid faceplanting.

"Where to?" she asked.

I grinned. "You will see."

We landed on the dorm roof, moving fast. She didn't question it, just followed, used to my bullshit by now. The hallway was quiet when we slipped in through a side window. People were asleep, or at least pretending to be.

I knocked. No answer. Knocked again.

A muffled groan came from inside. I opened the door.

Toru was curled up in bed, wearing a set of bright pink pajamas covered in tiny bunny prints. Her blanket was tangled around her legs, one sock half off. She shifted, mumbling something into her pillow.

She stirred as she heard the door, stretching slightly. I saw the moment it hit. She sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes. Her head turned toward me. Then she froze.

I raised a hand. "Yo."

She flinched so hard she almost fell out of bed. "W-WHAT THE…"

I grinned. "Good morning, beautiful."

Toru stared. Then groaned, flopping back onto her pillow. "What the hell, Ryuu? It is the middle of the night."

Nejire peeked over my shoulder. "Awww, she has little bunny pajamas! So cute!"

Toru shot up, blanket tangling around her. "Nejire? Wait, hold on… why the hell are you two in my room?"

"Because I need something," I said.

Her hands curled into her blanket. "And that required a home invasion? You couldn't just wait until morning like a normal person?"

Nejire tilted her head. "Would we be we if we did that?"

Toru opened her mouth, paused, then sighed. "Okay, fair point." She rubbed her face. "Still doesn't explain why you are here."

I leaned against the wall. "I need some of your Quirk-stabilized fibers."

She blinked. "Huh?"

"Hair. For a suit," I said. "Nejire needs a Miss Con outfit, and I am making one."

Her head tilted slightly, then she perked up. "Ohhh, are you gonna use it for visibility enhancement? Or maybe structural support? Cause I've been thinking how different flexibilities with my gloves…"

I pointed at her. "That. The enhancement."

She threw off her blanket, hopping out of bed. "Okay, okay, I have some stored. Gimme a sec."

She walked over to her desk and grabbed a small key, then headed straight for the storage cabinet in the corner. Unlike the usual stuff cluttered around her room, the cabinet was neat… locked, labeled, and organized like she actually cared about it. She turned the key, pulled the door open, and scanned the shelves.

Then she frowned.

I leaned against the wall, watching her eyes dart around. "You forgot where you put it, didn't you?"

Toru groaned. "No, I just… okay, maybe a little." She reached toward one of the top shelves, running her fingers over what looked like empty containers. "I know I put them here somewhere…"

I snickered. "Told you to mark them. Even you can't see your own hair."

She shot me a glare. "Yeah, yeah, I know. Shut up and help me look, you can see them."

I pushed off the wall and stepped next to her, glancing at the containers. Most of them were actually labeled… just not the important ones.

"You really labeled everything except the one thing you can't see?" I said.

"I was in a hurry!"

Nejire hummed, tilting her head. "Why don't you just, like, shake them a little? Hair makes noise, right?"

Toru hesitated, then picked up one of the unmarked containers and gave it a small shake. Nothing. She grabbed another. Still nothing.

I sighed, reached up, and grabbed a jar from the far back. "It is this one." I pointed at three others. "Nails, hair, and hair. Though second looks curly. Is that your head hair?"

Toru made a noise somewhere between a squeak and a dying cat before snatching the jar from my hand. "Get out."

Nejire peered over my shoulder. "Aww, is she blushing? I can't see. Describe me."

Toru turned even redder. "OUT!" She shoved me… hard.

I laughed, stepping back with a smirk. "Appreciate it."

The door slammed shut behind us.

Nejire crossed her arms. "You love getting on people's nerves, don't you?"

"Yes." I turned. "Next stop."

I reached Aoyama's door and didn't bother knocking. I kicked it open.

"Wake up, you sparkling bastard."

Aoyama flinched so hard he nearly rolled out of bed. He almost knotted himself with his sheet, so hard at that, his hair that was always styled was now a mess. He blinked at me, disoriented. "Ryuu?"

"Yeah, you know, the guy standing in your room right now." I stepped inside, shutting the door behind me. "Get up."

He rubbed his face, then blinked at the clock. "It is past midnight."

"Good observation. Move."

Aoyama groaned, sitting up. "Must you always be so…" He waved a hand. "Abrasive?"

I pulled out a chair and sat backward on it. "Must you always be so dramatic?"

He sighed, pushing his hair back. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

I pointed at his head. "Your hair. I am making a suit for Nejire, and I need it to be 'Cannot Stop Sparkling.'"

Aoyama blinked. "Pardon?"

Nejire peeked over my shoulder. "Ooooh, is this gonna be like a full-on glam moment?"

"Yeah," I said. "Need something that reacts to movement. Her Quirk is all about flow, so the suit needs to keep up."

Aoyama sat up fully, pushing his hair back. "You wish to use my resplendent locks for this?"

"Yes."

His mouth curled into a smile. "I must say, Ryuu, I never expected you to be so fashion-forward."

"I am not," I said. "I am just making sure she doesn't lose to some extra with a sparkly dress."

Nejire pointed at him. "Your Quirk makes you glow, right? Does that work with your hair?"

Aoyama tapped his chin. "My hair does possess a certain… luster. However, the real magic is in the refraction of light. If you wish for it to shimmer, you will need to integrate it properly."

"I know," I said. "Just hand it over."

Aoyama gave me a look. "You cannot simply demand my essence like a highwayman."

Nejire hummed. "Ooooh, what if we trade?"

Aoyama perked up. "Ah, now that is proper etiquette."

I sighed. "Fine. What do you want?"

He rested his chin on his hand. "A favor."

"No."

He pouted. "You did not even let me explain."

"I do not care."

Nejire nudged me. "C'mon, Ryuu, where is the drama? Let him make it interesting."

Aoyama smirked. "Indeed. One does not simply hand over their prized tresses without a story to tell."

I crossed my arms. "You want a story? Here is one. I leave this room without your hair, you get drop-kicked into next week."

Aoyama gasped. "Mon dieu!(My god) Such barbarism!"

Nejire laughed. "Okay, okay, what is the favor?"

He tapped his lips. "Hmm… I require assistance for my next video project."

I exhaled. "I am not doing one of your weird fashion reels."

"Not even a cameo?"

"No."

Nejire giggled. "Wait, wait, what if it is a duo thing? You and Aoyama, full dramatic slow-motion."

I turned my head slowly. "Do you have a death wish?"

She waved a hand. "I am just saying, imagine the views."

Aoyama gasped. "Ah, she understands artistry!"

"No one understands you," I said. "You are an enigma of bad decisions."

He sighed, shaking his head. "Alas, unappreciated in my own time."

I rubbed my temple. "Just give me the damn hair."

He huffed but reached for his desk, pulling out a small box. He opened it, revealing a bundle of neatly tied strands. "Collected during my last trim. I keep it for emergencies."

Nejire tilted her head. "What kind of emergencies?"

He gave a dramatic wink. "A gentleman never reveals all his secrets."

I snatched the box. "Great. We are leaving."

Nejire bounced after me as I turned toward the door. "So, how long do you think it will take to make?"

"A few hours," I said. "Gotta test material responses first."

Aoyama leaned back on his bed. "Ah, to think my hair shall soon be part of a grand design! How thrilling!"

I shut the door in his face.

Nejire grinned. "Okay, okay, let's get started!"
