She brushed off Logan and stared at his back. "Why would you do that?"
"I couldn't let you take the blow." He said.
She scoffed, "Pretender."
She walked out of the class, ducking into the empty girls' restroom, her heart pounding like it was trying to escape her chest. Her knuckles were white from gripping the edge of the sink, and her eyes stared back at her in the mirror with a terrifying calm. Her reflection wasn't Hallie. Not really. Not underneath the disguise.
She had become too good at pretending.
She turned the tap on and let the icy water run over her fingers. Slowly, mechanically, she splashed some on her face, letting it cool the burning behind her eyes.
Jerald knew.
Not everything, but too much.
But she didn't know if that was a good thing or bad thing. He was going to help her as Edna. But that was going to spoil her plan as Hallie.
It was an unpredictable risk. Dangerous.
But also... useful.
