Chapter 109 - That Kind of Grown-Up Thing... I'd Like to Experience It Too

Daziel's fingertip hovered over the send button, but his gaze was frozen on the message from Hanya.

...?

In the original storyline, Bailu was indeed possessed, but in that worldline, the one possessing Bailu was a playful, childlike Heliobus. Now, however, the Heliobus possessing Bailu was one that reveled in debauchery...

Was it really okay for this thing to possess Bailu?

Although Bailu was hundreds of years old, so her age might not be an issue, her physical model certainly was!

If it just controlled a bunch of golden statues to fight him, that would be manageable. But if there was some plotline that would attract the attention of the 'Censor' ancient beast, then he wouldn't be able to handle it...

Thinking of this, Daziel replied to Hanya—

[Daziel: I can communicate with Lady Bailu, but if something happens that's beyond my capabilities, I'm afraid I won't be able to handle it very well...]

[Hanya: Don't worry, I'll have HuoHuo come over to help. You won't be fighting alone.]

Seeing Hanya's reply, Daziel's worried heart relaxed a little.

At least with a judge from the Shi Wang Si present, there was a better chance of avoiding that kind of plot development, which was excellent.

[Daziel: That would be for the best.] He added a hug emoticon before sending.

[Hanya: The Dragon Lady was last seen in Jinren Lane. She vanished in plain sight. We need to find her first. I'll have HuoHuo meet you there]

Ending the communication with Hanya, Daziel removed his finger from the virtual screen. His phone slid back onto the nightstand with a faint, almost inaudible "tap."

What came into view were Guinaifen's drowsy, sleepy eyes.

She had woken up at some point and was now rubbing her eyes, looking at him with a mixture of laziness and curiosity.

"Sponsor Daddy," Guinaifen said, her voice still sleepy and rising slightly with a hint of coquetry: "Are you going out? If it's something fun, take me with you! Yesterday's footage didn't record, and my stream's stats have been terrible these past few days. I desperately need some explosive content for a showstopper..."

As she spoke, she stretched languidly, her graceful curves vaguely visible beneath her loose pajamas.

Daziel raised an eyebrow, his gaze lingering on her for a moment.

"Going ghost-hunting."

He stated it concisely, his tone calm as if discussing something mundane. "Are you sure you want to come too?"

"...?!"

Guinaifen's initially expectant expression instantly stiffened, and her sleepiness seemed to vanish completely, driven away by those two sudden words.

The experience of being possessed by a Heliobus yesterday was still vivid in her mind. The terrifying sensation of her soul being eroded made her feel a lingering fear even now.

She instinctively hugged her arms, her delicate body trembling slightly.

However, after only a moment's hesitation, Guinaifen's expression changed again.

She bit her lip, as if undergoing an intense internal struggle. Finally, as if having made a momentous decision, she nodded firmly.

"Yeah, why not!"

Guinaifen's voice suddenly rose a few notches, carrying an almost imperceptible tremor, as if she were trying to mask her inner fear with a high-pitched tone to bolster her courage. "Of course, I'm going! 'Xianzhou Supernatural Ghost Stories' has been a super hot topic these past few weeks, with explosive popularity! There's no reason to miss such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!"

Daziel looked her up and down with interest, a faint, unreadable smile playing on his lips, a hint of suspicion in his eyes.

Guinaifen's change of heart was a bit too quick, wasn't it?

Although in this timeline, the Shi Wang Si hadn't officially formed any ghost-hunting squad, having an extra helper wasn't a bad thing.

Wait, that's not right...

Daziel's gaze fell on Guinaifen again, his eyes becoming more scrutinizing.

Someone like Guinaifen, did she really have any combat ability?

This wasn't about witty banter on a livestream, nor was it some acrobatic performance.

This was the real world, with real dangers. Tricks like breathing fire from her mouth wouldn't cause any harm to the Heliobus possessing the Dragon Lady, let alone any DoT damage.

Guinaifen keenly caught the doubt in Daziel's eyes. She immediately felt her pride challenged, and her shapely eyebrows arched slightly.

"Don't look down on me!"

Guinaifen placed her hands on her hips, her ample chest puffing out, her tone a mix of indignant coquetry.

"I, Guinaifen, traveled all the way from my hometown to Xianzhou, roughing it and sleeping under the stars. If I didn't have a few martial arts skills, I would have starved to death halfway here! Don't worry, I won't cause you any trouble. Yesterday's incident... was purely an accident! An accident!"

Guinaifen patted her chest, producing a clear sound, her tone becoming lighter, with a hint of playfulness and a desire to please.

Daziel thought about it carefully. Guinaifen's words seemed to have some truth to them.

Anyone who could make it all the way to Xianzhou across the seas must have some skills.

Besides, he had now awakened the 'mental pierce' ability. Dealing with an intangible spirit like a Heliobus should be manageable.

Even if they encountered some unexpected trouble, with his current strength, retreating safely wouldn't be difficult.

"Alright."

Daziel nodded slightly. "Then hurry up and get dressed. We'll head out now."

Hearing this, Guinaifen immediately started scrambling to get dressed. While dressing, she pointed to Su Shang, who was still on the bed wearing an eye mask and sleeping soundly, and asked, "Should we wake Su Shang up too?"

Daziel's gaze swept over the sleeping Su Shang. After a moment of thought, he said, "Let's bring her along. It'll save me from her complaining later that I don't spend time with her."

Guinaifen leaned over and gently shook Su Shang's shoulder. "Su Shang, wake up! Your master is calling for you."

Su Shang groggily opened her eyes, her gaze still unfocused. "Ugh... Where are we going?"

A mischievous smile played on Guinaifen's lips. She leaned close to Su Shang's ear and whispered in a low, mysterious tone, "To catch ghosts! This time, you can't run away!"

"Ahhh—!!"

Su Shang shot up from the bed as if pricked by a needle, all traces of sleepiness gone, replaced by a face full of terror. "N-no way! Ghosts... Ghosts?! Weren't you just possessed by a ghost yesterday? Why are you going again? It won't possess me too, will it?!"

Watching Su Shang's panicked state, Daziel spread his hands helplessly and said, "If you're scared, it's okay not to go. It's just that you were complaining yesterday about me not spending time with you for so long, so I thought I'd bring you along today."

Hearing Daziel's words, Su Shang was momentarily speechless, her expression turning conflicted.

If she didn't go, she'd lose the chance to be with Daziel.

If she went, she'd have to face terrifying ghosts...

She struggled internally for a moment. Finally, as if having made some monumental decision, she stomped her foot forcefully. "I'll go! Why wouldn't I go! It's just ghost-hunting, what's there to be afraid of!"

In the end, Su Shang's desire to be with Daziel overcame her fear of ghosts.

However, even though Su Shang said so, her hands, tightly gripping the hem of her clothes, were trembling slightly.

Daziel nodded approvingly and urged, "Then get dressed quickly. Let's hurry and set off. The people from the Shi Wang Si are waiting for us."

Jinren Lane, bustling with a thronging crowd weaving through.

With the injection of corporate capital, Jinren Lane now had a bit more life, at least much better than its previously deserted state.

When Daziel arrived at the entrance of the lane, he immediately spotted the small, timid girl warily observing her surroundings—HuoHuo.

"Wow! Is this little HuoHuo? I heard Little Gui mention you on the way here. Hello, hello! I'm Su Shang, a rookie in the Yunqi Jun. Nice to meet you, nice to meet you!"

Su Shang, naturally friendly, approached and grabbed HuoHuo's hand. Her warm and lively smile instantly dispelled some of HuoHuo's shyness.

HuoHuo was startled by Su Shang's enthusiasm. She trembled slightly, her cheeks flushing a little as she responded softly, "Sister Su Shang... hello..."

Su Shang affectionately pinched HuoHuo's cheek, unable to stop cooing in admiration.

"So cute! Exactly as I imagined!"

Daziel facepalmed helplessly. He coughed lightly, interrupting Su Shang's enthusiastic greeting.

"Su Shang, that's enough. Don't scare her."

Only then did Su Shang tone it down a bit, sticking out her tongue and smiling sheepishly.

"Hehe, I just couldn't help myself! After all, little HuoHuo is so adorable!"

Daziel looked at the two girls before him, his thoughts racing. He cleared his throat and said, "Alright, let's first discuss how to find the Dragon Lady..."

HuoHuo also spoke up at the right moment, a hint of worry in her voice, "On my way here, I saw medical officers from the Dan Ding Si wandering around Jinren Lane as well. It seems they are also looking for the Dragon Lady... We probably need to hurry."

She paused, then lowered her voice and continued, "It's best if we can find the Dragon Lady before this blows up. If ordinary Xianzhou residents find out about the Heliobus, it will likely cause unnecessary panic and chaos."

Just as the atmosphere was growing a bit tense, a lazy and casual voice drifted over from behind the crowd.

"Hey now, no need to be so tense. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it!"

Guinaifen pushed through the crowd and sauntered over, holding three skewers of Qiongshi fruit. She had one in her mouth, the bright red pulp looking especially tempting under its clear sugar glaze.

Without any ceremony, she handed the Qiongshi fruit skewers to the other three, her words muffled as she spoke with one in her mouth:

"The way I see it, we should split up to be more efficient! Daziel, you have everyone's contact info, right? Start a group chat! We can share any new discoveries in the group!"

Daziel took the Qiongshi fruit skewer. Thinking Guinaifen's idea made sense, he took out his phone, created a new group chat, and after a moment's thought, named it "Ghost-Hunting Squad." Even though in this timeline they didn't have authorization from the Shi Wang Si, they could still use the name from the game's storyline...

Su Shang looked at the group name displayed on her phone screen, her mouth twitching as she couldn't help but retort:

"Ghost-Hunting Squad? Why... this name? Me and Little Gui hunting ghosts? Seriously?"

Daziel coughed twice, trying to deflect the slightly awkward topic.

"Ahem, don't worry about such details. It's just a name; what's important is action! Let's split up and search around Jinren Lane for now. Report any findings in the group chat immediately."

The group briefly discussed their search areas and then dispersed, blending into the bustling marketplace of Jinren Lane.

Daziel navigated the winding alleys alone, carefully scanning every corner, not missing any suspicious clues, hoping to find Bailu quickly.

The din of Jinren Lane washed over him like a tide, a cacophony of hawkers' cries, laughter, and conversations.

However, time ticked by. He had practically turned Jinren Lane upside down but still found nothing. Fatigue began to creep in.

Just as he was starting to feel disheartened and his steps grew heavy, his phone suddenly vibrated. There was a new message in the group chat.

He opened it to see a message from Guinaifen:

[Guinaifen: Hey! There's something going on here! I think I heard a child's voice, a very young one. There seems to be an adult woman talking next to her, and her tone sounds a bit off. Don't tell me the Medicine-Bearing Dragon Lady has been kidnapped?]

Those few short sentences made Daziel's heart skip a beat. His fatigue vanished instantly, and he quickly asked for more information.

[Daziel: Where? Exact location! Send the coordinates directly!]

Soon, Guinaifen sent the location coordinates. Daziel didn't dare to delay and immediately rushed towards the location.

When he arrived at the coordinates, he found Su Shang, HuoHuo, and Guinaifen already gathered there, looking gravely at a deep, dark alley.

Dim lights illuminated the entrance of the alley, but further in, it was pitch black.

Guinaifen pointed towards the depths of the alley and said in a low voice, "The sounds came from in there. It sounded like they were from a house at the end of the alley."

"Miss Bailu! Miss Bailu, where are you?"

Guinaifen was the first to call out into the depths of the alley. Her voice echoed in the quiet night, but there was no response.

Su Shang also shouted, "Dragon Lady! Come out and play with us! We came to play with you!"

HuoHuo hugged the tail in her arms tightly and whispered, "Th-this place feels... so strange... Tail also says there's the aura of a Heliobus here..."

Just as they held their breath, focusing their attention and preparing to go deeper, a burst of bell-like laughter suddenly came from the depths of the alley. It was crisp and pleasant, yet carried an inexplicable eeriness.

Immediately after, as everyone's pupils constricted, two figures slowly emerged from the darkness, gradually materializing and finally appearing clearly before them.

By the dim light, they could finally see clearly—it was two Bailus!

One was the familiar, small, and childlike Medicine-Bearing Dragon Lady, exquisitely adorable like a jade carving.

The other, however, was an adult version of Bailu!

The adult Bailu had a cascade of white-purple hair, smooth and lustrous like silk, falling in waves over her shoulders. Every movement exuded a mature and intelligent charm.

She had an exquisitely beautiful face. Traces of the younger Bailu could be seen in her eyes and brows, but the childishness was gone, replaced by a lively and free-spirited demeanor, yet with an added touch of allure.

Daziel was stunned. The scene before him left him speechless with shock.

That adult Bailu, her face, was strikingly identical to Baiheng, whom he remembered from a fleeting glimpse in an official game PV.

The only difference was that where fox ears would have been, there was now a pair of delicate dragon horns, glowing faintly in the dim light.

"They're calling us to play together!"

The childlike Bailu spoke first, her voice innocent and carefree.

"Silly."

The adult Bailu chuckled softly, extended a slender finger, and gently tapped the younger Bailu's forehead. "They're tricking you. They want to capture you and take you back."

"How about we play a game? Don't let them catch us, okay?"

The adult Bailu suggested, a playful smile on her lips.

"Okay, okay! Then we'll run first!"

Upon hearing this, the childlike Bailu cheered, her young face filled with excitement. The two figures instantly became illusory, as if merging into the night, and vanished into the wall in the blink of an eye, leaving only an empty wall behind.

"Ghoooostaaaaaah!"

Seeing the bizarre scene before her, Su Shang could no longer suppress the fear in her heart. She let out an earth-shattering scream, so shrill it almost pierced their eardrums, echoing through the silent alley and making their ears ache.

Guinaifen quickly covered her ears, startled by Su Shang's sudden scream, and complained irritably:

"Sister, you scared me to death! My god, the two identical Bailus didn't even shock me as much as your yell almost sent me to the grave..."

Su Shang also realized her outburst, her cheeks flushing slightly. She stuck out her tongue sheepishly and explained with a hint of grievance:

"Sorry, sorry! I-I really didn't mean to. Honestly, even though I know this must be a Heliobus's trick, s-seeing two Bailus at once is still really scary!"

HuoHuo, hugging Tail, whispered in agreement, "I... I completely understand, Miss Su Shang... Even after working for the Shi Wang Si for so long, I still can't get used to the strange things these spirits do."

"This isn't the time for idle chat."

Daziel took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing the shock and confusion welling up inside him. He interrupted their conversation, his tone serious and urgent, "Hurry and chase them! Don't let them get away!"

"They can pass through walls!"

Su Shang exclaimed, a hint of despair in her voice, "Even if we catch up, it's useless, right?!"

"It just altered our senses; they didn't actually pass through."

HuoHuo quickly explained in a low voice, trying to calm everyone's panicked emotions and bolster her own courage, "A Heliobus's abilities often involve tricking people's eyes, making us see illusions. They must have used some kind of cloaking technique to make us think they passed through the wall. In reality, they must still be in the alley!"

"What do you mean? Can you explain it in simpler terms? Su Shang and I don't understand, HuoHuo!"

Guinaifen blinked, a hint of confusion in her eyes, clearly a bit lost with HuoHuo's somewhat technical explanation. "Just tell us directly what we should do now!"

HuoHuo took out a strangely shaped bell from her pouch. The bell was entirely crimson, engraved with intricate patterns, and topped with a crystal-clear gem.

"This bell is called the 'Tongxin Huoling.' It's a tool the Shi Wang Si developed to deal with Heliobus after the Suiyuan Calamity."

HuoHuo explained, her tone reflecting her professionalism as a judge.

" Heliobus exclude unrelated people from their illusions, leaving only the victim. But shaking this bell can synchronize our brainwaves with the Heliobus's."

"I won't explain the specific principles; if I read the manual, it would be dark by the time I finished..." After speaking, HuoHuo helplessly twitched her tail.

Guinaifen looked around, her gaze finally landing on a house not far away. "It seems like those two went into this house. Why does this house look so... strange..."

It was an old house. The vermilion paint had peeled off, revealing mottled wood underneath. The eaves were covered in a thick layer of dust, as if it had been uninhabited for a very long time.

The air around the house seemed to have frozen, emitting a sinister and terrifying aura that sent shivers down one's spine.

Su Shang swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly. "Daziel, you're the strongest among us. You take the bell and lead the way!"

Daziel glanced helplessly at the three of them, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "You three are more timid than the last. Isn't it obvious I'll be the one to go first?"

He took the bell from HuoHuo's hand and shook it gently. The bell emitted a crisp, pleasant sound that flowed softly through the quiet night.

Daziel, holding the bell, led the way towards the house. Guinaifen, Su Shang, and HuoHuo followed closely behind him, as if clinging to a lifeline.

The alley grew deeper and the light dimmer. The house seemed like a gaping maw, waiting for their arrival.

"It feels so gloomy and terrifying..."

Su Shang muttered under her breath, her voice laced with obvious fear.

"Yeah, yeah, it feels like a ghost could pop out at any moment..."

Guinaifen chimed in, tightly gripping Su Shang's sleeve.

HuoHuo didn't speak, merely hugging Tail in her arms tightly, her small body trembling slightly.

Just then, the vermilion main door behind them creaked loudly and slammed shut.

"Aaaaaah!" This time, all three of them screamed, their shrieks almost loud enough to blow the roof off.

Daziel turned around, looked at the three girls who were pale with fright, and shook his head helplessly. "Really? It's just a door closing. Is it that scary?"

"Y-you're not scared, of course..."

Su Shang's voice was trembling uncontrollably, but she still tried to maintain a shred of dignity as a member of the Yunqi Jun.

"B-but we're different..."

"Of course, we're different!"

Guinaifen immediately chimed in, nodding exaggeratedly. She gripped Su Shang's sleeve so tightly her nails nearly dug into the fabric.

"This gloomy atmosphere, plus the door creaking shut suddenly—th-this is definitely the classic opening for a haunting in a ghost play! Let me tell you, when I used to listen to storytellers, I often heard this kind of scene. It would scare the audience so much they wouldn't even dare to breathe!"

HuoHuo froze on the spot, her small body shaking like a leaf, tightly clutching the tail in her arms.

Tail looked at her and fumed, "Alright, alright! You haven't even seen anything yet, and you're already shaking like this? You're embarrassing me!"

Hearing Tail's voice, Su Shang's body jolted violently. Her already pale face instantly became deathly white.

She stiffly turned her head, her eyes wide with endless terror, looking towards the source of the voice...

Su Shang stammered, "H-HuoHuo! Y-your tail... can talk?! Is... is that the ghost?!"

Tail's voice held a hint of smugness and a mischievous tone. "Yeah, I'm a ghost! You've seen one with your own eyes today, haven't you?"

"Aaaaaah!"

Su Shang couldn't hold it in anymore and let out another earth-shattering scream.

She leaped back as if pricked by a needle, pointing at HuoHuo, her voice cracking.

"You judges from the Shi Wang Si... h-how can you carry a ghost around with you!"

Daziel sighed and tried to soothe their emotions first. "Alright, Mr. Tail, stop scaring her. What's in front of us is just an illusion created by the Heliobus. There's nothing to be afraid of."

"Let's go, we'll go inside and see," Daziel said, taking the lead and striding towards the interior of the courtyard.

Passing through a dilapidated porch, they arrived in a desolate courtyard. Weeds grew rampant, the stone path was cracked, and a few withered trees swayed in the wind, making creaking sounds that added to the bleakness.

"This place... is too rundown..." Guinaifen muttered under her breath, her eyes full of vigilance.

"It feels like no one has lived here for many years..." Su Shang also lowered her voice, cautiously observing her surroundings.

HuoHuo, hugging Tail, silently followed Daziel, her eyes darting around as if searching for something.

Daziel didn't speak. He concentrated, sensing the aura around them. The sound of the Tongxin Huoling seemed to be guiding him in a certain direction.

They followed a moss-covered path, went around a rockery, and arrived in front of a dilapidated room.

The room's door was ajar, and a faint light shone from within.

"They... should be inside," Daziel said softly, signaling them to be quiet.

He gently pushed the door open, and a musty smell assailed his nostrils.

The room was very dark, with only a single oil lamp emitting a faint glow. By the dim light, they could see that the furnishings were simple: just a table, a few chairs, and an old cabinet.

And in the corner of the room, two figures stood with their backs to them, seemingly talking about something.

Those two figures were indeed the two Bailus who had disappeared earlier.

"We found them!" Su Shang exclaimed in a hushed voice, a hint of excitement in her tone.

Guinaifen also breathed a sigh of relief, patting her chest. "Finally found them. That scared me to death..."

HuoHuo, however, silently observed the two Bailus, a trace of doubt in her eyes.

Daziel didn't speak. He slowly walked towards the two Bailus, simultaneously raising the Tongxin Huoling in his hand and shaking it gently.

The ringing of the bell echoed in the quiet room, as if carrying some magical power, causing the bodies of the two Bailus to tremble slightly.

"It's time for this to end, isn't it."

Daziel's voice was low and serious, carrying an undeniable authority. "What's the point of you turning into that woman's appearance?"

The mature Bailu slowly turned around, a hint of confusion on her face. "Which woman? I don't know who you're talking about. I just turned into what this little girl would look like when she grows up."

She paused briefly, as if organizing her thoughts or perhaps trying to defend herself, her tone carrying a hint of grievance and a desire to argue her case.

"She's hundreds of years old; she should have grown up long ago. She's just been restricted by that lock on her tail—who knows where it came from—and hasn't been able to grow. I just wanted to give her the life she was supposed to have, to let her know what she'd be like when she grew up. What's wrong with that?"

Guinaifen lowered her voice and asked HuoHuo with a puzzled and uncomprehending tone, "No way? This Heliobus doesn't seem much smarter than Su Shang. HuoHuo, didn't you say that the remaining Heliobus were all ruthless characters, one in a hundred?"

HuoHuo curled up slightly and explained to Guinaifen in a soft voice, " Heliobus have different temperaments. They act entirely based on their preferences. It's not like powerful Heliobus necessarily have lofty ambitions."

Daziel stared at the adult Bailu and spoke slowly, his tone calm yet carrying a hint of warning, "You mean well, but the adult world isn't that wonderful. Without the restriction of that lock, she might not be able to bear the burdens she carries. She might not even... be able to remain herself."

Dan Feng and Yingxing, in their attempt to revive Baiheng, resorted to forbidden arts, using Baiheng's deceased body and the flesh and blood of Shuhu to forcibly create a Sinful Dragon.

That Sinful Dragon was eventually slain by Jingliu and reincarnated, becoming the Bailu of today.

And the longevity lock on Bailu's tail was not a good luck charm for safety at all, but a restriction deliberately placed on her by the Dragon Masters to control the latent power within her.

Her inability to grow taller and the stagnation of her power were all caused by that lock working insidiously.

But even if Daziel knew the plot and was aware of these secrets, so what?

The power struggles involved were intricate and complex; pulling one string could affect the whole situation.

Moreover, who could guarantee that if Bailu were completely freed from her restraints and continued to grow, she wouldn't lose control again, repeat past mistakes, and turn into a Sinful Dragon knowing only slaughter...

The adult Bailu tilted her head, an enigmatic smile on her lips, and softly retorted, "I just want to give her the right to choose."

Daziel scoffed, a hint of disdain in his voice, "Give me a break. That lock can't be removed, at least not by you."

A glint flashed in the adult Bailu's eyes. She looked at the childlike Bailu behind Daziel, her tone enticing, "Why don't you ask the little girl for her own thoughts?"

Hearing this, Daziel turned around, his gaze softening as he looked at the childlike Bailu, and asked gently, "Bailu, what do you think?"

The childlike Bailu heard him, blinked her eyes in confusion, and muttered softly,

"I... I don't know. Although I also really want to grow up and see what the world is like as an adult. Sometimes I wonder if, when I grow up, I won't have to be watched all the time and can do whatever I want to do..."

She looked up at Daziel with a hint of apprehension, her voice tinged with reliance, "But listening to Big Brother Daziel's tone, is it the best choice for me not to grow up?"

Daziel's expression was serious. He nodded gravely, his tone affirmative, "Yes. Trust me. Although this is cruel to you, please believe me, it's a better choice for you not to grow up for now."

Hearing this, a flicker of disappointment crossed the childlike Bailu's eyes, but she still nodded obediently and replied softly, "Mm..."

Suddenly, she looked up again, towards the adult Bailu, her tone filled with curiosity and longing. "But... Big Sister told me that when you grow up, that kind of thing... feels really good... I want to experience it too."
