Chapter 5 - Her

Xavier

"Son, look who it is!" Mother excitedly pulled me to her side.

Oh, for goodness sake!

"Riley." I internally rolled my eyes.

"What's this? Aren't you two excited to see each other?" Auntie Jasmine asked.

We both just continued staring at each other, not saying a word.

"Riley, come on!" Auntie Jasmine tried to persuade her daughter.

"Mommie, you know we're too old for hugs." She complained while looking at her Dad to help her out.

"She's right, honey. I'm sure the two of them are very happy to see each other again after what..." Uncle Vincent said.

"5 whole years!" Mother chirped in.

Has it already been that long?

"Anyways, I see you're doing great." Riley cleared her throat. "Congratulations, Xavi. You're really impressive."

"Thank you." I reciprocated her tight-lipped smile.

"I wonder why they're so awkward with eqch other." Mother whispered to Auntie Jasmine as the both of them left to catch up with their other friends. Our Dad's also left us alone.

Riley and I were left to just stare uncomfortably into each other's eyes. It was very evident that she was not enjoying my company just as much as I was.

Riley took a glass of champagne from the waiter passing around and had a sip.

I scoffed.

She rolled her eyes.

Fortunately for me, Auntie Jasmine returned to take Riley away.

"Riley, come. I need to introduce you to someone."

I could care less. I was just glad that I didn't have to look at her anymore. I joined Sean and the others as they talked about anything and everything. I could finally breathe.

In my effort to look around the party, my eyes chose to specifically land on her. Just great. I know Riley, and she doesn't seem to be doing too well.

I guess it's time to go home.
