Chapter 44 - 44_ The Bet Between The Two Friends

Silence….

No one moved a single muscle for a few minutes. They were just little ants who didn't want to be caught up in the feud between the two powerful beings.

Even Kevin who cared less about Andrew Wilson's background watched the man and his friend get locked in a staring contest. For a few minutes the two move their eyes away.

Kevin didn't know what his friend was thinking about, bringing that incident up in front of Andrew. He knew from the smirk that Luther was about to do something, but he didn't expect to pull this out.

It happened more than 8 years ago, during their last year in high school. Andrew was attracted to a junior girl back then. And he chased after the girl for quite a while. And his method of expressing his feelings was anything but conventional. More like he threatened the girl to give in to becoming someone at his disposal.

Obviously, the girl didn't want to have to do anything with the man, which led to her being bullied. The girl was not the first person to become a victim of Andrew and his gang's bully. But she was the one that almost sent them to detention as it turned out, the girl too had connections, one that rival that of the Wilsons family.

Since this happened a long time back, nobody brought the event up again. And definitely not in front of the person involved himself. This was because most people feared offending the power behind Andrew and those who didn't fear the power cared less about his history.

And Luther belonged to the latter group.

Obviously, Andrew was not pleased with him bringing up his dark history. And just as he was about to question Luther if he was really being against him, the idol suddenly smiled and said,

"It seems that nobody found my joke funny. I'll punish myself with this glass."

Saying that, without waiting for anyone's response, he gulped down the liquor in one go. All the coldness he had in his eyes which he had seen before vanished as though what Andrew had seen before was an illusion. But he could not forget the taunt those orbs looked at him with.

Andrew gritted his teeth as he clenched his fist before taking in a deep breath. Now was not the time to go against Luther. The person may be in the entertainment industry now, but as the only son of the Chairman of the Grandos Groups, Luther was not someone he can openly fight against.

"Oh… Brother Luther was just making a joke. Why are you guys so pale as though you've seen a ghost?"

Andrew pointed at the rest of the guests who, after being called out, tried to make their laughter sound as genuine as possible. And like that, the tensest situation was dismissed.

Everyone thought that the topic of Maevie Oz had come to an end. And it would be better to not bring it up. But who would've thought that someone would enter the room and shout out loud.

"Yah! Luther. What's going on with you and that little stalker of yours?"

It was Sylva Saint, the other closest friend of Luther, Tyler and Kevin. And unfortunately, also the loudest and most clueless.

"For the first time she greeted me. Me Luther. Me. Can you believe that? That princess sees no one but you. And she was being very polite too. And how come she just let you be free here. Didn't she always stick to you like a sticker whenever you come here? Could she have hit her head in the accident? But Tyler said she was not seriously injured. Maybe we should consult a neurologist. Or should it be a psychiatrist..."

And so, Sylva did not see the warning sign Kevin was sending in his direction.

"Hey! Why are you not saying anyt_"

Earning himself a glare from Luther. Only then he saw Kevin blinking his eyes at him.

"Are your eyes okay? Did dust get into them?" Asked the clueless man.

Kevin wanted nothing more than to grab the tray in front of him and slam it at the fool's head. Maybe that would awaken some sense in that man. But obviously he didn't do that. Instead, he claimed himself down and called Sylva to sit beside him.

"Here." He handed him a drink. "Your throat must've dried from talking too much. Have a drink first?"

Sylva nodded his head and muttered a soft thanks and took a sip from the glass. But then he looked across Kevin at Luther who was clearly ignoring his presence. Then Luther suddenly stood up.

"I'll go get some fresh air."

"Okay. Tyler must be coming up too. Don't take forever to come back."

Luther nodded to Kevin but gave his other friend a short glare before walking about the room.

Seeing that he was being glared at by his close friend after being ignored, Sylva asked Kevin,

"Why was he glaring at me?"

He feared that he may have done something unknowingly that angered his friend. Kevin sighed before recounting the previous incident. And in response, Sylva just a sorry smile.

"Heh he. My bad. I was not aware that something like that happened here."

"Just don't start ranting whatever you have in your mind as soon as you barge in next time. And… Learn to read the atmosphere. You're so clueless."

"It's not my fault that I'm so pure and innocent." Sylva argued at his friend's accusation of being clueless.

"That's not called being pure or innocent. It's called being ignorant." Hissed out Kevin.

"Whatever…"

Clearly Sylva didn't take what his friend said to his heart. Instead, he was instead interested in something else.

"So. Do you think she's just pretending to change?" He whispered to Kevin.

"Before. Yes. But now. No" Replied Kevin.

"Eh? Why? It's not the first time she has played this trick."

"Exactly. It's not the first time she played this trick. So, she must've known that it was useless. Besides, she had never ignored Luther for more than two months before. So, she really must've changed."

"But she could be just more determined this time. And it seems to be pretty effective this time." Sylva argued.

"Could be. But I believe that she has really changed because of many reasons."

"What reason?"

"First is the drug party scandal and the accident. Getting into serious troubles changes people's perspective."

"Uh huh!" Sylva nodded to Kevin's point.

"Second, she's more focused on her career now. And also, the fact that she has not been making trouble for both Sienne and Luther these few months. I also heard that she has not been hanging out with her group of friends since the party incident."

"Hmm…" Sylva rubbed his chin like an old sage as he nodded his head. "I understand your points. She may have really changed in some aspects, such as her perspective of friends and importance of a career. She must be trying to change her nature for the better. But I find it hard to believe that she could give up on Luther. Feelings of more than ten years don't just vanish after waking up one day."

Kevin chuckled.

"Even a cow gets tired after chasing after the grass for a while. Imagine chasing after it for more than ten years and not even getting a single strand of it. Maybe she's come to know that there are plenty of grasses around her that are willing to be eaten by her."

Sylva too laughed at his friend's choice of metaphor.

"But our Luther is one of the greenest and the most tender grass out there. How can some other grass compare to him? Unless she already found someone greener and more tender than him. But I think that next to impossible"

"Who knows? What if she already found that greener and more tender grass?"

"Don't believe it."

"Well. I agree to disagree." Kevin said.

"Well… Let's wait for Luther's birthday. See if she really changed or it's just a pretense of hers." Sylva made a suggestion.

"Luther's birthday?" Kevin questioned.

"Yeah! His birthday is in a few months. Every year Maevie does something grand for his birthday. If it happens again this year, it's proof that she has not given up on him." Sylvia explained.

"And if she does not…"

"Then I'll accept that she has really given up becoming Luther's wife."

"And 2 million."

"Huh?" Sylva exclaimed.

"It's not fun to bet without putting up a waiver." Kevin explained as he shrugged his shoulders. "Or are you not confident that you'll win."

"Bet! I'll definitely win…" Sylva gave in to the taunt making Kevin smile with satisfaction. Clearly the two were confident in their own decisions.

"It's a deal then."

Kevin stretched out his hand which was grasped by his friend.

"Deal!!"
