Chapter 14 - 14

**Exact Moment: Spider-Man's Death.**

*"I'm dying… I'm really dying, hahaha… I couldn't even stop Solus. I really am a failure—as a friend, as a nephew, as a husband, but most of all… as a father."* Spider-Man thought as his consciousness slowly faded away.

When Spider-Man regained consciousness, he found himself in a completely empty space, bathed in a white light that seemed to offer him peace—though he was incapable of accepting it.

Suddenly, Spider-Man heard a voice he never thought he'd hear again in his life.

*"Peter… how have you been, son?"* said a middle-aged man with white hair as he sat down beside the dazed Spider-Man.

Snapping out of his stupor, Spider-Man tightly hugged the man beside him as a flood of tears streamed from his eyes.

*"I'm a failure, Uncle Ben. I can't do anything right. I always end up hurting the people I care about. I couldn't save my reputation as a hero, I couldn't save my friendships, I couldn't save my marriage… but most of all, I couldn't save my daughter. Not once, but twice. Two damn times I failed to protect my own blood because of my responsibility as a hero. I really am a damn failure."* Spider-Man's voice was ragged, torn apart by the misfortunes life had thrown at him, despite all the good he had done.

*"Easy, Peter. It's not your fault—it's mine. I never explained to you what the phrase *'With great power comes great responsibility'* truly meant. But now, I have the chance to explain it."* Ben spoke with a guilty expression.

*"I'm sorry, Uncle Ben, but I don't have time. I need to find a way out of here to save my daughter,"* Spider-Man said as he stood up.

*"Relax, Peter. May will be safe until you return to life,"* Ben replied, grabbing Spider-Man and forcing him to sit back down.

*"What do you mean, 'return to life,' Uncle Ben?"* Peter asked, bewildered. He knew he couldn't come back to life—when he said he'd find a way out, he meant he'd seek out the god of this place to bargain for a short return in exchange for his soul.

*"Just as you heard, Peter. You owed Solus a lot, and though he drained your totemic essence, he hasn't digested it. Right now, Solus is fighting Rhino and will likely die. Your undigested totemic essence will return to you, bringing you back to life—possibly with some of Solus' powers. But that's something you'll have to figure out yourself."* Ben spoke as Spider-Man's expression grew more and more confused, wondering how his uncle knew so much. Just as he was about to ask, Ben raised a finger to his lips.

*"Alright, let's get back to that damn phrase. When I told you that, I was mainly talking about family. When you have a family, you have great power—but also great responsibility. I said it hoping you wouldn't be like your parents, who put their power (their work) above their responsibility (you). But clearly, you misunderstood. Maybe it's true what they say—different people can take different meanings from the same words."* Ben's expression was slightly annoyed that his nephew had misinterpreted his words.

*"But that phrase became my mantra! I thought you meant my powers—that I had to use them responsibly,"* Spider-Man said, feeling as if his entire world was crumbling.

*"Son, why would Uncle Ben say that with that meaning when he didn't even know you had powers at the time?"* A woman with brown hair and hazel eyes spoke as she approached Spider-Man, who quickly stood up in alarm.

*"Who are you?"* Spider-Man asked warily, stepping in front of his uncle.

*"You don't recognize your own mother, brat? Think you can rebel against me?"* The woman smiled as she hugged him.

*"Mom… You're… my mom?"* Spider-Man asked.

*"Of course she's your mom, Peter. You don't remember her because she left when you were still very young,"* Ben said, standing up and walking over to them.

*"What's wrong, little troublemaker? Still don't believe I'm your mother?"* The woman wiped the tears from her son's eyes.

*"Mom… You have no idea how much I missed you,"* Spider-Man said as he hugged her tightly.

*"I know, Peter. I know,"* the woman replied, tears also welling in her eyes.

*"Well, I suppose you two have a lot to talk about, so I'll take my leave. And remember, Peter—in exactly two minutes, you should try to leave this place,"* Ben said before vanishing from the white space before Spider-Man could respond.

*"That Ben… always has to be so mysterious,"* Mary said with a smile.

*"Alright, Peter, we don't have much time. Tell me how life has treated you so far."*

Though Spider-Man felt a bit uneasy, he recounted the most important events of his life to his mother. Throughout his story, she remained silent, listening with an expression that wasn't entirely friendly.

Just as Spider-Man was about to finish, he began to fade away while his mother watched with a warm expression.

*"Remember, Peter—you don't live for strangers. You live for yourself and those close to you. No outsider gets to dictate how you use your abilities."* May smiled.

*"I hope you live for yourself in this second chance, Peter."*

Those were the last words Peter heard before completely disappearing from the white space.

...

A new Spider-Man—a new Peter—has just opened his eyes. One who lives for his family… and for himself.
