"Not here, right?" Yan Fei walked over and asked in a low voice.
"Mm, not here." Yang Xing was immersed in anticipation and completely missed the unusual tone in Yan Fei's voice. "He's currently at Professor Carter's lab. Professor Carter, a friend of Professor Hans, has an independent lab off campus sponsored by a company. It'll be more convenient for us to go there."
...
Professor Hans drove a somewhat feminine yellow compact car himself; he didn't rely on assistants. He drove Yang Xing and Yan Fei straight off campus.
It seemed close to noon by then. The three ate a quick meal and spent over an hour making their way to Professor Carter's lab.
What surprised Yan Fei was that Professor Carter turned out to be a Black man. In America, skin color often carries significant weight. Not only had Carter managed to become a professor, but he'd also had a lab built solely for him. This could only mean one thing: he was truly extraordinary.
